La reprise économique est l'un des sujets les plus importants du moment. Les analystes scrutent le moindre signe de reprise dans tous les secteurs économiques. Le marché des produits de luxe ne fait pas exception. Il a dû faire face au ralentissement économique comme tout autre secteur de marché. Comment cela évolue-t-il ? Raphaël Kahane a rencontré le responsable de la marque de montres et bijoux, Cartier International. Cette maison française est une filiale du groupe suisse Compagnie Financière Richemont SA et a un long passé. Le nom de Cartier est lié aux têtes couronnées, stars et célébrités. Un certain Prince de Galles a déclaré que Cartier est "le bijoutier des Rois, le roi des bijoutiers." Mais comment ce "roi des bijoutiers" se défend face à la crise ? Comme Bernard Fornas, président de Cartier International, l'a déclaré le dernier trimestre 20! 09 du groupe apparaît très positif, mais il ne doit pas oublier que d'autres magasins autour du monde n'ont pas eu la même chance. A la question de ses attentes pour 2010 il a simplement répondu : "J'espère que 2010 montrera des signes de reprise. Mais je n'en suis pas sûr." Comme personne ne peut avoir des certitudes sur le futur, la seule chose qu'un homme d'affaires puisse faire est de se préparer. "Ce que je sais c'est que j'ai tout organisé pour être très réactif, très flexible et très rapide dans tout ce que je fais." a-t-il ajouté. Ainsi Cartier est prêt à arrêter ou redémarrer sa production du jour au lendemain. Tandis que les profits du marché de l'art devrait bénéficier de la sculpture de Giacometti "L'homme qui marche", le marché de la bijouterie est dans une autre position. Comme l'a précisé Fornas, ces deux secteurs ne sont pas reliés. Ta! ndis que les oeuvres d'art sont vendues pour des sommes farami! neuses, en bijouterie il faut vendre plus d'une pièce pour que l'entreprise soit rentable. C'est pourquoi il "essaie toujours de récupérer des parts de marché en période difficile."

Frustrated "Microsoft" complains about "Google" by Zivka Deleva
Three companies complain about the antitrust elements of “Google”, and that’s why they informed the European Commission. Though there still isn’t an official investigation, and the Commission doesn’t want to come out with the names of the companies, “Google” already knows who are its “enemies”. We are talking about British price comparison site “Foundem”, French legal search engine “eJustice.fr” and “Microsoft”-owned “Ciao” from “Bing”. These companies are concerned about the way the Internet giant’ search engine works and the way it manages with the digit! al advertising. They complain that “Google” lies about the results of competitor sites when it makes rankings. “Google” thinks that these search engines are simply not very good. According to “Google”, the company hasn’t done anything wrong. The Commission has questioned “Google” these days. “We are confident that our business operates in the interests of users and partners, as well as in line with European competition law. We are the first to admit that our search is not perfect, but this is due to the technical difficulties of compiling accurate rankings for millions of results in just a few milliseconds” - wrote Google's senior counsel for competition, Julia Holtz. This complainants are pretty strange, but everyone knows that all of them belong to one company – “Microsoft”!For the first time “Google” is been a target for “abuse of dominant position” cl! ause. It is not strange that other companies are so willing to! ruin &# 8220;Google”, when even small children know that it is the world’s leading search engine. “Google” owns 70 percent search market share in the United States, but internationally that number is about 90%. This is not the first time that “Google” is under an investigation. It happened with the Book project. “People are generally frustrated that Google has been so successful and so powerful. The EU has been interested in addressing Google’s market position and this gives it an opportunity to do so and to address all these frustrations and concerns that triggered these multiple complaints.”, sais Greg Sterling, an analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence in San Francisco.

Three Google Executives Convicted of Privacy Violations in Italy by Magdalena Rosova
A video of a Down's syndrome teenager being bullied was posted on Google Videos. Italian court decided to give suspended sentenced to three of Google's executives. On Wednesday an Italian court convicted three Google's executives over a video showing the teenager being bullied. The video was uploaded in 2006 and was removed after two months. In the video four schoolchildren were bullying the teenager with Down's syndrome and more than a dozen of others were watching and did not intervene. The children who bullied the teenager were suspended from their school in Turin. Last year the victim's family dropped a lawsuit against Google. David Drummond, Google Senior Vice-Pr! esident, former Italy board member George De Los Reyes and Google’s Chief Privacy Counsel Peter Fleischer were given six-month suspended sentences for violation of privacy. A fourth executive was acquitted. Google will appeal the decision of the Milan's court saying that the video had been removed within hours after was notified by the Italian police. The company further described the decision of the court as "an attack on the fundamental principles of freedom on which the internet was built". The prosecutors praised the court for protecting personal interest above corporate profit. In statement they added that human rights are more then corporate interests. The case rises question of the future of the internet. Platforms like Facebook and YouTube say that then can not control the content created by their users and therefore they do not hold any responsibility. Only if they are informed that something is illegal, they can remove it. The prosecutors accused G! oogle of being negligent in not removing the video sooner. How! ever, Go ogle's lawyers said the company removed it within hours. But the prosecutor argued that the video was one of the most-viewed and was subject of controversy for a long time before the police asked Google to remove it.

The biggest and most popular beverage producer in the world “Coca-Cola Co.” is seriously thinking to buy the largest bottler companies that in decades work separately than the production sector, informs an anonymous source. So it doesn’t have to mean that that would happen! This step was initiated by “Coca-Cola Co.” biggest rival, that did the same in April, last year. The reason for this step was the fall of the soda sales, and the companies had to have more control over costs and the distribution of the drinks. For more than 110 years, this company had a strategy to make only the syrup concentrate and then sell it to bottlers all over the wo! rld that have bought its franchise. Actually, the bottlers produce the final product, add filtered water and sweeteners, than sell, distribute and merchandise the product. There still isn’t an agreement on paper, but there are rumors that “Coca-Cola Co.” is planning to spend $15 billion. That means that it would buy “Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc's ” North American operations. As the other bottlers are concerned, they are going to continue the same model of work. The other operations of “Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc's are going to stay independent, like the ones in Scandinavia and Germany. For NA operations, bottling coke is the 70 percent of its net revenue last year. This might be a dangerous step for the biggest beverage company. “Coke” is the largest shareholder of “Coca-Cola Enterprises”, with 35 percent stake. Few months ago, its rival “PepsiCo Inc” did the same thing and it was only a question of time! when would Coke producer will imitate this step. Lots of expe! rt say t hat this is not what Coca Cola really wanted to, but it was pushed by its rival, and has follow the “evolving nature of U.S soft drink market”. "This is a tit-for-tat business. Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda didn’t run and now is facing justice. This 53-year-old chief executive is standing in front of House committee investigating deadly flaws connected with his company. As he said in his testimony: “We pursued growth over the speed at which we were able to develop our people and our organization. I regret that this has resulted in the safety issues described in the recalls we! face today, and I am deeply sorry for any accidents that Toyota drivers have experienced.” As it is not only about company’s responsibility but responsibility of his own, Toyoda planned to appear with a translator by his side. As lawmakers have also lot to lose they will continue to push Toyoda for answers on whether his company’s top-selling cars and trucks are safe to drive. But it is not only lawmakers who want to know the truth. Another person who is scheduled to testify is the mother of an off-duty California highway patrolmen killed with three family members in a runaway Lexus in August. Toyoda emphasizes in his three-page statement that he personally test-drives Toyotas and makes a personal appeal for credibility. “My name is on every car.” he says. If his words are true only another investigation will show.

Top Toyota executive apologises to US Congress by Magdalena Rosova
Toyota's top US executive James Lentz denied Tuesday the accuses that electronic flaws in the Toyota's vehicles caused deaths to its drivers but he apologized for the slow response and not sufficient dealing with the safety problems. James Lentz said that in spite of all their good faith efforts the company was simply not able to deal with the safety problems very fast. The first hearing on Toyota's recall of millions of vehicles was opened in Congress. The company is blamed for about 30 deaths of American citizens. The Japanese automaker is further accused of misleading the public and accuses also say that Toyota had failed in adequate investigations of the serious d! efects in various of its models. The safety problems involved sudden acceleration problems and Lentz admitted that the company made mistake in handling of two causes sudden acceleration. He said that Toyota acknowledged those mistakes, apologized and had learned from them. Lentz further said that problems with acceleration were not tied to defects in electronic throttle systems. Toyota president Akio Toyodawill come to hearing on Wednesday and promised that his company will do “much better” on safety. For Wall Street Journal he wrote that as all Toyota vehicles bear his name, every time a car was damaged it was as if it was him as well. Toyota, which became the world's top automaker over General Motors, is now fighting to keep its position and reputation for high quality, safety and reliability. The company also faces lawsuits in US which can cost it billions of dollars.

Economy recovery is the most important issue from all. Analysts are looking for any sign of economic revival in all economic sectors. The luxury goods industry is no exception. It had to fight against economic downturn as well as any other industrial sections. How is it looking with it now? Raphael Kahane met the head of the exclusive jewelry and watches brand, Cartier International. This French manufacturer is a subsidiary of Switzerland’s Compagnie Financiere Richemont SA and has a long history. Name of Cartier is connected with royalty, stars and celebrities. One Prince of Wales said that Cartier is “Jeweler to Kings, King of Jewelers.” But how is this “King of Jewelers” fighting against the crisis? As Bernard Fornas, President of Cartier International said, the company’s last quarter 2009 looks very good, but he mustn’t forget that other stores around the world didn’t have the same luck. On the question what does he expect ! from 2010 he just answered: “I hope that 2010 will show recovery. But I don’t know.” As no one can be sure what comes next, the only thing a businessman can do is to prepare. “What I know is that I have prepared everything to be very reactive, very flexible and very quick in everything we do.” he said. So Cartier is ready to stop or start again its production over night. While art sector coast to profit on Giacometti’s sculpture of “Walking man”, jewelry sector is in different position. As Fornas said, these two sectors are not connected. While art pieces are sold for great amounts of money, jewelry has not such a value to one sold piece would be sufficient for the company. La chaîne télévisée France 24 a eu une occasion de parler à Joseph Stiglitz, professeur à l'université de Colombie et également le teneur de prix Nobel depuis 2001 en sciences économiques, au sujet des perspectives économiques mondiales et des paquets de stimulus américains. Stiglitz est venu à Paris pour promouvoir la version française de son dernier livre appelé la « Freefall ». En français il était appelé comme « le Triomphe d'avarice » ce que le professeur a raisonné par le souci de l'éditeur que le mot « Freefall » ne serait pas bien traduit en Français. Il a également admis qu'il avait l'habitude d'utiliser ce mot « non seulement pour décrire l'effondrement de l'économie mais également l'effondrement de l'ensemble d'idées ». Les idées du fondamentalisme du marché, aussi bi! en que la notion d'où proviennent nos héros. » Le plus grand problème se situe non seulement dans l'échec de nos banques mais dans l'échec de toute la société. Mais il n'a pas oublié de souligner que cette crise économique porte l'étiquette "américaine" et que la situation là-bas est beaucoup plus compliquée qu'en Europe. D'une part l'Union européenne a des problèmes de résoudre la diminution de crise en raison du paradoxe qui se situe dans le fait que 16 pays partagent la même devise mais pas la même politique budgétaire. À la différence des Etats-Unis qui ont la même devise et sont basés sur le même système budgétaire. Ainsi si l'un des états a des problèmes d'autres états peuvent simplement lui déléguer de leurs ressources. Comme Stiglitz a dit, si tous les budgets étaient dans l'équilibre, tout ser! ait bon, tout fonctionnerait bien. Comme il a ajouté ce n! 'est que la question de l'équilibre de budget mais également de la solidarité : « Si l'Europe montre la solidarité avec la Grèce puis ils ne devront pas lui donner aucun argent. Mais si elle ne fait pas ainsi puis il y pourrait avoir un réel problème. »

Microsoft-Yahoo! deal gets green light by Magdalena Rosova
After Microsoft and Yahoo! Won antitrust clearance from the U.S. and European Union, they said they would go ahead with their planned tie-up in Internet search. Both the US Department of Justice and the European Commission agrees with the search agreement of the two companies. Now the companies will focus on the process of implementing the deal. The European Commission also announced its approval of Microsoft's plan. Microsoft and Yahoo! will implement the deal in the coming days. Yahoo! will now move its search platforms to Microsoft. All customers and partners over the world will be transitioned by early 2012. Both companies stated that the transition would create! unified search marketplace with improved innovations for consumers. The transition will also give more opportunities to advertisers and web publishers. The companies will create a new platform with a larger pool of search queries. A year ago Microsoft offered Yahoo! 47.5 billion dollars for takeover. The details of a new partnership were finalized already in December. The companies believe to overcome Google, current leader in a web search and advertising market. Although this is just the beginning, the green from European Commission and US Justice Department is and important milestone in the whole process. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer believe that together with Yahoo! they would provide “more choice, better value and greater innovation.” US Justice Department officials said that the transition would not lessen competition in the United States and therefore there is no reason to not agree with the deal. Les trains Eurostar n'étaient pas préparés pour l'hiver by Zuzana Zelenakova
Les résultats de l'enquête du comité indépendant sur les pannes des Eurostars en décembre ont été publiés vendredi dernier. D'après ce rapport, le groupe Eurostar n'a pas su préparer ses trains pour l'hiver, plus spécifiquement il n'a pas su protéger les composants sensibles des trains à grande vitesse de la neige et de l'humidité, ce qui a finalement entraîné différentes pannes. De plus, la réaction d'Eurostar face à ce cas d'urgence a été critiquée parce ce que pas suffisamment coordonnée ni prompte. La série de pannes a commencé le 18 décembre et a coincé plus de 2000 passagers pendant près de 16 heures sur 5 trains en direction de Londres. On les a laissés dans le noir, sans air conditionné dans un tunnel surchauffé. "Nous étions sans électricité. Nous avons été à cours d'eau, puis de nour! riture et la communication du personnel a été très, très insuffisante." a déclaré un des passagers évacués des trains. "L'air conditionné a disparu en même temps que le courant. Nous avons dû ouvrir les portes d'urgence nous-même. La procédure d'évacuation que nous avons suivie a été celle que nous avons élaborée nous-même." En plus des voyageurs bloqués dans les trains, les vacances de quelques 90 000 autres personnes ont été perturbées. Le rapport a préconisé plusieurs améliorations pour l'Eurostar, principalement mécaniques comme des systèmes de protection des composants électroniques sensibles et une ventilation en cas de neige. De plus des locomotives de secours aux deux extrémités du tunnel ont été fortement recommandées pour que de potentielles opérations de secours dans le futur soient signific! ativement accélérées. Des améliorations de! service s sont également mentionnées. "Je sais que nous avons laissé nos passagers démunis juste avant Noël et je suis déterminé à rétablir les choses" a déclaré Richard Brown, le directeur général d'Eurostar, dans un communiqué. "Nous nous concentrons maintenant pour faire une réalité des recommandations de ce rapport tout en prenant en considération des mesures supplémentaires que nous avons identifiées nous-même pour rectifier notre service."

Re-industrialization is the way out of the crisis by Magdalena Rosova
France's most renowned economist Patrick Artus,head of research at the French bank Natixis suggests to believe that the crisis is behind us. Artus is also co-author of the book Sorties de crise, that has just been published in France and brings new view on exit strategies from the crisis. He thinks that we were doing two big mistakes. It is important to realize that growth is back in positive territories, because rich countries have huge budget deficits and zero interest rates. But it is more often believed that the countries are not improving because the world trade is still 30 percent below its pre-crisis level and investments are still going down and unemployment is g! rowing. Artus says the first mistake is to look at current situation from this point of view. The another mistake is that we think we are having banking crisis, but it is the crisis of real economy. During the last ten years most of production capacities moved to cheaper countries. The richer countries were losing jobs which were reasonably qualified jobs for educated people.This qualified jobs were replaced by unskilled jobs. The depression went to its maximum, and now we need to realize that manufacturing disappeared from our economies. When we look at the structure of the cruises of the crisis we will see shrinking of the manufacturing and replacement of the skilled jobs by unskilled. Artus says basically people were going down the leader to jobs with lower wages. Atrus further emphasis the financial crisis is just the outcome and consequence of the fact that the finances have been used as bridge to gap in the real economy. Real solution to the crisis Artus sees in! re-industrialization, which is not easy to do because now the! countri es have to compete with cheaper products from marginal countries and China. Therefore richer countries need to bring more sophisticated products. For Artus Germany is an example of rich industrial country with 25 percent of people working in industry, in US it is only 8 percent and in France 13 percent.

Stanley Fischer is a well-known economist and currently also Governor of the Bank of Israel. Acquiring his Ph.D. in economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he returned there in 1977 as a professor and remained till 1988. He was a Ph.D. thesis advisor of former Federal Reserve Governor Ben Bernanke at the time. He also worked as a Vice President of the World Bank and from 1994 to 2001 he was with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Finally, in 2005 he replaced David Klein as Governor of the Bank of Israel, which is a rather special kind of financial institution. The Governor alone has the power to decide whether change rates or not, voting of board memb! ers is not needed. He became an Israeli citizen as a condition for acquiring the post. He was one of the speakers at the annual Herzliya Conference in Tel-Aviv District, which is an event dedicated to discussions about the Israel´s national policy attended by political leaders and prominent business figures. During his speech Stanley Fischer said that Israel got through the economic crisis relatively easily mainly due to complex and flexible banking system. As he was aware of the upcoming crisis as early as 2007, the Bank of Israel decided to regulate exchange rates and thus secure the local economy. He had only words of highest respect for Israeli business circles. He also predicted that given the current development the current 5 percent growth could jump to 6 or even seven percent. Entering the OECD, which is to take place in several months, will only contribute to the positive trend. In Fisher´s eyes, the main obstacle is the bureaucracy. "However", he said, ! TV Channel France 24 had an opportunity to talk to Joseph Stiglitz, Professor at Columbia University and also 2001 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences about the world economic prospects and the American stimulus packages. Stiglitz came to Paris for promotion of French version of his latest book called “Freefall”. In French it was called as “The Triumph of Greed” what professor explained by worry of the publisher that the word “freefall” would not be translated well into French. He also admitted he was using that word “not only to describe the collapse of the economy but also the collapse of the set of ideas. Ideas of market fundamentalism, also even the notion of who our heroes were.” The biggest problem lies not only in failure of our banks but in failure of all the society. The results of the independent committee investigation concerning December Eurostar trains breakdown were released Friday. According to the report Eurostar failed to prepare its trains for winter season, more specifically it failed to protect sensitive components of the high speed trains from snow and moisture, which eventually caused the malfunction. Also Eurostar´s subsequent reaction in an emergency case was criticized as not being sufficiently coordinated and prompt. The series of breakdowns began on December 18 and resulted in more than 2,000 passengers being trapped for about 16 hours on five trains headed for London. They were left in the dark with no air-condi! tioning in the overheated tunnel. "We were without power. We ran out of water, we ran out of food and there was very, very poor communication from the staff," said one of the passengers evacuated from the trains. "We lost air conditioning when we lost the power. We had to open the emergency doors ourselves. "The evacuation procedure we followed was one that we set down ourselves." Aside from trapped travelers, holiday plans of another about 90,000 people were affected in a most unpleasant way. Podľa správy spoločnosť Eurostar nedostatočne prispôsobila svoje vlaky zimnej sezóne, ináč povedané neochránila citlivé časti vysokorýchlostných vlakov pred vplyvom snehu a vlhkosti, ktoré spôsobili zlyhanie. Le pays criblé de dettes s'affiche dans les magazines du monde entier. Ses perspectives ne sont pas bonnes non plus. La première option qu'a ce pays est de commencer à économiser et à réduire partout où cela est possible. L'économie, comme tout le reste (industrie, affaires, tourisme, services et population) touché par la crise, en souffrirait et nul ne peut dire si elle s'en remettrait. Les conséquences d'u! n plan d'austérité affecteraient le niveau de vie et creuseraient les clivages entre les classes pauvres et riches. Les conséquences pourraient amener la déstabilisation de la société grecque et de sérieux problèmes, comme la perte de statut de la monnaie commune. Une deuxième possibilité est de souscrire à un prêt. Le Fond Monétaire International a déjà frappé à la porte, mais il semble qu'un autre acteur soit entré en scène, la Chine. Selon certains représentants Grecs la Chine pourrait prêter près de 25 milliards d'euros. Un prêt de cette envergure améliorerait la position de la Chine en Europe. La Chine est à présent le principal détenteur de la dette américaine et avec son économie florissante ce pourrait être un nouveau chapitre dans le renforcement de ses propres intérêts. En étant à la fois le donat! eur et l'exécuteur de la dette nationale, elle pourrait c! ontr 4;ler la totalité de la région. La Grèce n'est d'ailleurs pas le seul pays ayant eu des problèmes de dette. D'après le Wall Street Journal, le Portugal et l'Espagne tout comme d'autres pays des Balkans pourraient sombrer dans d'énormes problèmes d'endettement. Les banques et organisations européennes ont essayé de réagir à la situation. La banque centrale européenne a annoncé qu'elle garderait ses taux d'intérêt inchangés à 1% tandis que la banque d'Angleterre maintenait son taux d'emprunt à 0,5%.

Les cours de la bourse et des matières premières ont reculé en Asie avec la crainte que les problèmes croissants en Europe ne ralentissent la relance de l'économie mondiale.L'indice Nikkei japonais, l'indexe du marché des actions de la bourse de Tokyo, est à son plus bas niveau des 7 dernières semaines, les exportations affaiblies par un yen fort mais aussi par les problèmes en Europe. Le yen, comme le dollar, s'est raffermi alors que les investisseurs se sont dirigés vers des actifs considérés comme plus sûrs dans cette période agitée.Les bourses asiatiques pourraient rencontrer des conditions encore plus difficiles au deuxième trimestre.
