Toyota Announces Voluntary Safety Recall
by Magdalena Rosova
February 8, Toyota announced voluntary safety recall of about 133 thousand Prius vehicles and 14,500 Lexus Division vehicles to update software in the anti-lock brake system. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) is normal operation, it engages and disengages as the control system senses tire slippage. Some owners of Prius and Lexus Division 2010 HS 250h reported difficulties with brakes. Toyota changed latest model of 2010 Prius that was introduced last month, when it improved the ABS system's response time and system's sensitivity to tire slippage as well. This month, Toyota will also do a production change for HS 250h. Toyota is trying to do everything possible to regai! n consumer trust in Toyota. The recalls are also part of this effort. Toyota realizes the recalls caused inconvenience to the owners, but it will try to do the procedure very quickly and without any trouble. President of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, announced last week the quality improvement program. The company decided to undertake a top to bottom review to ensure that its vehicles have highest standards of safety and reliability. The company is further implementing more quality controls. Toyota dealers can now perform the software update on the Prius vehicles produced since May 2009 and all HS 250h vehicles. Prius vehicles produced before May 2009 use different ABS system and therefore do not need the repair. Next week Toyota is planning to start mailing letter to Prius owners about the safety recall. Toyota will also run a voluntary safety recall on 7,300 Camry vehicles, model 2010. Owners of this model will be notified in the middle of February.
