SigEx Telecom : Blu-ray beats HD DVD in sales any day
by Corina Ciubotaru

Blu-ray discs or BDs are the newest kind of storage devices, with five times as much space available as DVDs. They use a different technology than DVDs in their players, a special kind of laser, to be exact, and are being used mostly for storing high-quality movies. Some film studios like Sony, MGM or Disney, only release new movies on Blu-ray discs. Their rivals are HD DVDs of course and now that Blockbuster announced it would sell only Blu-ray movies in over a thousand of its stores, the HD DVD supporters got really mad. Not surprising, as Blu-ray discs had outsold HD-DVDs by two to one in April, when the 1 millionth BD left the shelf. Later on Sony Blu-ray sales increased by 1000 percent until early July, following PS3's successful launch in Europe. Sony expects Blu-ray player sales to be better than those of last year by six or even seven times. Even if the player for these discs is more expensive than the one for HD DVD, it's more attractive to consumers due to the larger amount of data it can carry, which ranges from 25GB on a single-layer disc, to 200GB in estimated capacity. Blu-ray discs are more expensive to create, but because of a new technology they incorporate, they are more resistant and harder to scratch. Whether producers were right to be so confident in the new disc's success, only time will tell. But the astonishing number of important companies involved in developing and marketing this little product should be proof enough of its qualities.

SigEx Ventures : To install Windows Vista, or not to install it? That is the question.
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

I don't use Windows Vista. I don't have a serious reason, I'm just very used to my Windows XP. I didn't even tried to find out how it looks when it first broke into the market on January 30. I got a glimpse of it last month, at a friend's house and I was impressed. It was so different from what I thought it looked like. I haven't bought it but perhaps I will soon. It's tempting in a way to acquire something that sold in 60 million copies since its release and that surpassed in the first five weeks of its release the total number of Apple installations. Microsoft made $50 billion- a first in the history of the company. When you look at this data you are bound to think that it is a really good product. You are bound to think Microsoft is really the leader on the market. This is what would keep me from acquiring Vista. It's like acquiring the latest most fashionable cell phone, or the latest creation from Versace- a trend, something you can live without, dispensable. Maybe I'll go Vintage and install the old Windows 3.1 on my PC just because I don't really like the way Microsoft COO Kevin Turner is lavishing praise. Is really Microsoft the best thing out there or are they keeping younger companies out of the market?

SigEx Telecom : MySpace is becoming a safer place
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

We all have to salute a wonderful initiative. As we al know sex offenders have flocked MySpace, bullys have terrorized kids online, a large sort of obscene content has circled MySpace. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd has created an account on MySpace. His page is : http://www.myspace.com/polkcountysheriffsoffice. I think it was about time someone applied the old saying "Can't beat them, join them!" MySpace was initially a place where new bands promoted themselves. It soon became a social network where people link to each other, united by the same interests. If children and teens will link to the sheriff's page, a golden star will appear on their page and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd thinks this will scare off a part of the sex offenders. It would be funny if one of the MySpace creeps offends the Sheriff. He already has 297 friends, among are included: Law Enforcement Cadaver Dogs, Inc , Miami-Dade Police Department, Officer Memorial and Kids Come First Florida. MySpace users seems to enjoy this initiative if you check out the comments on the sheriff's page. For example: "Thank you for the add! Thanks from Orange County, Florida!"( Jul 28 2007 7:39A ), " Thanks for the add and keep up the great work and keeping kids safe online"( Jul 27 2007 8:23A ), and other 26 positive comments. Perhaps the sheriff will tell the kids how nice is to go out and breath fresh air and play football with real friends. Or maybe it's to soon to ask this...I'm sure MySpace would resent it though.

SigEx Telecom : Brothers aim to hold Facebook founder accountable
by Delia Cruceru

The three former Harvard students that accused Mark Zuckerberg â€" founder of famous social networking site Facebook - twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra, want to see Zuckerberg held accountable for his actions. Cameron Winklevoss in an interview for CTV's Canada AM told:” The fraud that's been perpetrated here is partly against us, but it's also against 30 million people who believe the site was developed in an ethical way and that it was the true creation of Mark Zuckerberg, when in fact it couldn't be further from the truth," The 23 year old Mark Zuckerberg worked for his colleagues for developing their networking site ConnectU.com, for three or four months. But after they founded out from a Harvard newspaper about Zuckerberg’s Facebook they terminated the employment. "We basically entrusted him with all of our source code and business plan and models and everything that we had pretty much been working on for up to a year about, prior to engaging him. So, he basically did what you could call a brain drain and kind of took off with it under our noses,” Cameron Winklevoss said. The accusers say they have evidence of exchanging source codes via e-mail with Zuckerberg, and they have testimonies from other programmers against him. The brothers have no material motivation with this lawsuit, they only want to see Zuckerberg in court.

Facebook is upgrading
by Claudia Sonea

Started in 2004 by then-undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg as a social site for fellow Harvard University students, the social network Facebook had a great success due to the profiles that students could administrate at their will. Recently, this network thought to extend its applications and has acquired the website start-up Parakey, created by two of the developers of the Firefox browser, Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt. In conclusion, Facebook will be transformed into an online operating system for Internet users. The new browser is developed as a social space and not as an instrument to visualise information and it wants to be a protected space inside the browser through which the protected information will be shared only to those elected by the person that introduced it, privacy will be protected and this is an impportant issue in times of great trouble. Thursday, after a press release, we were put up to date with the new project and introduced deep in the entire concept. For all the Romanian users, that aren't that many, this are very good news. And for those that don't have an account yet, I suggest they make one and guarantee they won't regret it. It's just like Hi5, only that is an upgraded version. Enjoy your surf and don't forget to watch the attached movie, there are useful information regarding Facebook and on its popularity.

SigEx Telecom : MySpace Vs. Facebook.
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

The afirmation that "a flurry of recent articles have observed that young people are leaving MySpace for Facebook in droves, setting off speculation that MySpace is becoming the latest victim of fickle teens following the hot new thing" was demolished by researcher Danah Boyd from University of California, Berkeley. Every teenager that has a profile on a social network were targeted by advertising. Both sites have been powerhouses for advertisers because of their huge, wide-reaching audiences, says Robin Neifield, chief executive of interactive marketing agency NetPlus Marketing. Knowing that MySpace gets twice ore more as many unique visitors as Facebook, they posted announces about teenagers are swiching to its rival. Facebook visitors between ages 12 to 17 jumped 149% over the past year, while MySpace lost 27% of teens, according to ComScore Media Metrix.Estimated ad revenue for 2007 calendar year for Facebook is $125 million, $525 million for MySpace, according to research firm eMarketer. Together, the two account for 72% of all online advertising on social networks. "Facebook is what the college kids did. Not surprisingly, college-bound high schoolers desperately wanted in, meanwhile MySpace, is the "cool working-class thing" for high school students getting a job after graduation rather than heading to the Ivy League", wrote Boyd in her essay. Advertisers should look beyond demographics when placing ads and instead analyze online behavior like who visited other sites with similar content, who downloaded what or who clicked on which ads, she says. "It's not very often these days that we buy based on demographics alone."

SigEx Telecom : Google wants partners
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Owning the most popular Internet search engine,Google may bid at least $4.6 bilion for wireless airwaves in a federal auction. Partnerships with phone companies may promote Google's technology, a strategy resembling that of chipmaker Intel Corp., which underwrites companies that it expects will help spur semiconductor sales in the long run. Sacca never said what companies were considered by Google potential partners. After beating Yahoo! Inc. and Microsoft Corp. in the search industry, Google poses a threat to AT&T and Verizon, said Daniel Briere, chief executive officer of TeleChoice Inc., a consulting and research firm in Mansfield Center, Connecticut. AT&T and Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile-phone companies, oppose the wholesale-leasing plan. They plan to buy some of the spectrum to expand their high-speed Internet services, which only work with devices and software they approve. "This is actually preventing the largest number of people who could possibly have access to the Internet from having that access," Sacca said. A partnership with a phone company would allow Google to have unfettered use of a wireless network without owning and managing it. Intel forged a similar relationship in July 2006 when the world's largest semiconductor maker invested $600 million in Clearwire Corp. to promote a high-speed wireless technology called WiMax.

SigEx Telecom :Social networks taget for fraudsters
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

In order to identify fraud by posting too much personal information on their profile pages, social networkers are opening themselves up, information provider Equifax said. Increasingly large amounts of personal information is becoming available to fraudsters and identity thieves, as MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Friends Reunited and others are more and more accessed by people. Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, warned that "Fraudsters are taking advantage of the craze for social networking, and people do not realise the significance of the information they put out on the web and who may be accessing it.More and more consumers are signing up to these sites every day and the chances are they'll put on their date of birth, location, email, job and marital status. We do not want to stop people using these sites, but we do advise them to limit the information they make available to stop people stealing their identity." Chief security analyst at MessageLabs,Mark Sunner, told vnunet.com that the internet emerges a whole new level of social engineering."Many consumers have only just made their first foray into this new and exciting web 2.0 development. The last thing they will be expecting is that the same water which they treat as entertainment is already muddied with the kind of individual that makes a career out of identity theft, spam and phishing." Some tips to help avoid vecoming a target on social networkings are offered by Equifax: do not put common passwords, like date of birth; it is recommended to use privacy setting and let only your friends view the information; do not mention when you leave on holiday or informations which could ruin your chances of a new job; an last but not least, be wary of everyone, because photos and profiles are often decepyive.

MySpace- a living dead
by Claudia Sonea

Entered on the market as one of the most promising social site and also being the first site of that kind, MySpace has a future that is not too bright. Some would say, the administrators are to blame for the lost of grace, others would keep quiet and simply register to another site. What will happen and where is all heading remains a mystery and a very big controversy due to the fact that Yahoo is planning to take over the site. Why would a giant company acquire something that is ought to be "dead"? Like the majority, I too have an account on MySpace, but I have to confess I switched to Hi5 and Facebook. Reasons are undoubtedly numerous and statistics show that others have done the same thing, in consequence MySpace is losing about 30% of their registered users a day. That is an exaggerated number, because if it was true, in three days we would not have anymore this site. However, there are serious reasons to be concerned about the future of the site. The main causes of the fallback are those referring to the unattendance of the site by the admins, this leading to many unsolved complaints of the users who should always receive a red carpet treatment in order to maintain them content and tied to the use of the site. Now, I know this might be difficult, but no one asked for perfection, so we would be grateful at least to try to fulfil the basic needs, that MySpace isn't offering anymore. Unless new changes will occur, and I bet they will, due to the Yahoo's interest in this site, MySpace will become a living dead web space. Let us keep our fingers crossed and hope better things are about to come. Until further news, enjoy your surf!

SigEx Telecom : Online record numbers in China
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

162 millions Chinese people are using the Internet, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said Wednesday. The number was growing at the fastest rate since 2004.CNNIC said in a report that the number of Chinese Internet users increased 31.7 percent since June 2006.The number of Chinese Internet users oversees the top-level domain and tracks Internet usage in China with its increasing of 31.7 percent since June 2006, said CNNIC. That was the fastest growth seen in China since mid-2004,thanks in part to a change in CNNIC's definition of an Internet user.In 2004 the number of Internet users grew 34.5 percent to reach 79.5 million. In the middle of 2005 and 2006,numbers released by CNNIC showed annual growth of 18.2 percent and 18.1 percent, respectively. The previous definition has been in use for 10 years, but now CNNIC changed the definition of an Internet user from someone who spends at least one hour online each week to someone who accessed the Internet at least once during the previous six months,in its latest report. CNNIC said that most Chinese Internet users, 122.4 million people, get online using wired broadband and 55.6 million use Wireless Internet access. Moreover, there are 44.3 million people who access the Internet from mobile phones, CNNIC said, noting that some users access the Internet with more than one type of connection. China`s Internet penetration was bought slightly below the global penetration rate of 17.6 percent.

Outsourcing companies aren't as evil as you might think
by Corina Ciubotaru

Today it’s almost common knowledge in the IT world that if you want services done cheaply India’s the place to go. Outsourcing has become somewhat of a trend and played a key role in developing poor countries with good science colleges such as India, China and Russia. But even though most companies think outsourcing is the easiest way to cut costs, this is not always the case. Cheaper workforce may mean lower quality, as some companies have noticed, and there even exist programmers who will only fix software bugs for a living. Language barriers are a serious problem when it comes to outsourcing, and the presumed low cost is initially rather high because companies have to send their own employees to train the outside crew and it may take him a while to work through all the issues. Outsourcing companies usually handle services like call centers and customer support for various companies, and rarely make the core products themselves. Some companies like Motorola chose to have their products manufactured elsewhere than the home country, but most firms believe it’s too expensive to move entire production facilities along with know-how to a far-away land. Some would say that turning to outside countries for services will ultimately destroy the IT business in America, by leaving worthy programmers out of work. But the reality is that there are very few programmers without a job in the US, while more and more employment opportunities arise for them each year, especially if they have precious knowledge in areas like Web 2.0, XML and user-generated content. This domain just isn’t interesting enough for many people, so companies also need to use workers from outside the USA to meet their demands.

Let the hunting begin
by Claudia Sonea

Apple's plans regarding the shifting of iPhones through out the entire European continent are remaining a mystery and turned out to be a hunt for most of mobile companies. Arun Sarin, Vodafone Group chief executive, confirmed the unspoken desire of all to sign a contract with Apple, but his company involvement was still not commented, until further announcement. However, Sarin said that European networks are 3G based, while Apple's device uses EDGE (also known as 2.5G) networks and they expect a change to happen. Lack of 3G support is emerging as one of the major market inhibitors and that is why the American company has to conform to the new demands. Although the wideband area coverage will be greater, there will be changes concerning the impact battery life on the sophisticated device. Analysts still don't know when the changes will occur, but the latest date given was March next year. Until then the hunt for the contract is on. Apple now seems set to favour a country-by-country distribution deal. I don't now about you, but to me this is way more than I was expecting, I'll keep my finger cross, so my mobile company gets the contract, I bet I'll have great advantages. So stay connected, surf a lot and keep in touch with the latest news.

Open source goes to the movies
by Corina Ciubotaru

From now on, open source will mean more than free programs under the GNU license, developed by many passionate programmers. Open source goes global with the advent of fanfiction and open source movies. “Fan fiction is a broadly-defined term for fiction about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creators,” according to a Wikipedia definition. This means that there are web sites where people can come up with their own versions of continuing a story, sometimes even a very well-known one, such as Robin Hood. Some of these stories even get published, as is the case with Eric Flint’s novel 1634: The Ram Rebellion. There’s even news of an open source movie coming up, called Jathia’s Wager, directed by Solomon Rothman, a man who has previously released a free full size movie over the Internet. This time, he wanted to write a story that was both serious and easy to modify. For Jathia’s Wager, he has written a script about a young man who lives in an isolated community and must make life-changing decisions and the author is now encouraging people to make their own contributions to the story. In the end, Rothman will shoot his own and then five more versions of the story and will release them on the Net for free download, reuse and re-edit for everyone interested. The director hopes the online community will become very involved in this type of projects in the future as the influence of Web 2.0 on their lives will drive them to shape everything to suit their needs, including art.

SigEx Telecom : Google offers site-specific search for businesses
by Delia Cruceru

The search giant announced the launch of its Custom Search Engine in the paid version, now called Google Custom Search Business Edition, with prices starting from $100 per year to $15.000 per year or even more for websites with many queries, and it is ad free. It includes an XML application programming interface (API) which makes it easy for customizing search result presentation, technical support, and the ability to display search results under the company's own logo rather than Google's logo. Nitin Mangtani, lead product manager for Google's Enterprise Search group said: “Customers spend an enormous amount of time and money building their Web sites, most of these sites are lacking is search." "There are a lot of legitimate businesses which spend money on bringing visitors to the Web site and they want search results but no ads," Mangtani explained. "And they want support. They need somebody to talk to, especially companies with no IT." For using Google Custom Search Engine Business Edition it doesn’t require any hardware or setup, it’s only necessarily to go to a specific Web Page, set up the search engine and generating four lines of HTML code for the home page, and this process takes about 10 minutes.

Google unveiled Google Custom Search Business Edition, further fleshing out its enterprise stack.Google Custom Search Business Edition is a hosted service that lets small businesses quickly and easily add Google search to their Web sites and it also includes site search hosted by Google so SMB customers needn't install and maintain their own technology. The Custom Search Business Edition has some key differences, while the original Custom Search Engine and the new business version both offer search results customization and reporting features about visitor behavior. Through the differences, we can find the option to turn off ads, e-mail and phone support from Google's Enterprise Search, and business integration features through an XML API.The alleviation of the pains many small businesses face in trying to allow customers to search their Web sites to get information or buy products represents the goal of Google Custom Search Business Edition. Lots of money are spent on search advertising and search engine optimization to help customers find their business, but once customers find them, navigating among the unfamiliar products or services can be a chore. The Custom Search Business Edition is positioned by Google as a salve for the navigation issues and this dilemma is also targeted by search rivals Microsoft and Yahoo. Product manager for Google Enterprise Group,Nitin Mangtani, said the original free Custom Search Engine "doesn't completely appeal to the business Web site. There are a lot of legitimate businesses which spend money on bringing visitors to the Web site and they want search results but no ads," Mangtani explained. "And they want support. They need somebody to talk to, especially companies with no IT." The prices Custom Search Business Edition starts at $100 a year for searching up to 5,000 pages, and extends to $500 for 50,000 pages. Moreover, larger support volumes of pages through its enterprise sales group for business that require it will be supported by Google. Mangtani also explained the pricing scheme:"For us to go after the millions of sites with just 500 or a thousand pages, we needed a product with a very low total cost of ownership; $100 per year makes sense. You can only offer that price point with a hosted solution. That's why the need for creating a business solution which is in between the free and business appliance product line." Google Search Appliance and Google Mini are included into the offerings from the Google Enterprise group, both of which offer more control over security, as well as search crawl depth and timing.
