The French Legacy
by Claudia Sonea
France is no longer setting trends like it once did. Across time the country held high the flag of innovation, of ingenuity, of artistry, but nowadays, it can hardly take pride with a famous writer or painter. However, the 21st century generation takes benefit from the huge cultural and artistic legacy of the previous generations. There are museums, art galleries, art shows, exhibitions that attract millions of tourists every year and also local people. Among the most important museums, that should be visited at least once in a lifetime, is of course Louvre. Time seems to have stopped there and visitors can go back in history se! eing objects, paintings, statues from ancient Rome or Mesopotamia. At Louvre the present meets not only the past, but also the future offering a unique experience. Currently at the Louvre there are thematic exhibitions like Joseph Kosuth “Neither Appearance Nor Illusion”, From Izmir to Smyrna, Discovery of an Ancient City, The Louvre invites Umberto Eco: “Mille e tre", Battista Franco, Venetian Artist at the Courts of Italy, A passion for Delacroix: the Karen B. Cohen Collection. There are also all kind of activities for people to better explore the museum like Still-Life Painting in Northern Europe – Scene-Setting and Symbolism which involves a tour from the Pyramid to the Richlieu wing through the large escalator on the right, leading to the second floor and then a walk through the first three rooms (French paintings), up to the galleries of northern European painting. Rare art collections can also! be seen at the Grand Palais (from January 13 to February 21 t! he Monum enta 2010 event), Musée Maillol (from February 3 to June 28, C'est la vie - vanities from Caravaggio to Hirst), at Musee d’Orsay (from March 15 to June 27, Crime and Punishment from Goya to Picasson) or at the open-air exhibitions held on the Champs-Elysées, the banks of the Seine or the Champ de Mars.
