Extreme difficult times!
by Barbora Misakova

On January 7th and 8th there was held a Conference on the “Future of capitalism” in Paris. Raphael Kahane from international news television channel France 24 met Jeffrey Sachs who tried to explain why global leaders are so divided on solutions to reform the financial system and solving other global problems. The reason why the world leaders can hardly handle with these problems together lies in the fact, that these issues are really tough and worldwide. What is more global and local problems which these politicians have to solve are usually pretty intermeshed. As said Jeffrey Sachs: “in the weight of day to day political crisis the international high minded statements [just] disappears.” Politicians have lot of other worries on local base, which must be solved first, as they get local votes for that. As we are living in extreme difficult times, it is impossible to solve everything at once. Many conflicts and problems are bound together. These days we! have to face environmental problems and poverty. There are also war and terror conflicts which are uneasy to solve. Food, water and financial crisis hit the world with the great force. There is lot of promises and words from world leaders, but actually no activity is done. Sachs sees the problem in missing “governance structures that are in place to harmonize the problems that we face and the means to solve them.” As he continued, the problem of hunger debouched. Leaders at G8 summit in Italy this past summer announced $20 billion to help starving people around the world. Sachs pointed out that it was another example of nice announcement with no action, as no single penny was seen yet and no organize global response was made. As he added, we are waiting for something practical, something that real money could be really spent for. If we are going to live so long to see it, is the question!
