What we can and cannot aford?
by Barbora Misakova
Economy moves the world, and it moves the people as well. While some (analysts) try to persuade us there is no such a big crisis that should (negatively) influence us in the way we spend our money, actually economic recession is here and we cannot ignore it even we would like to. A few years ago, opening a Goodwill store in a middle-class New York suburb would not have made sense, but today it is full of shoppers combing through racks filled with second-hand clothes, shoes, blankets and dishes. After the Great Recession which showed us what does it mean “to struggle”, what some people once thought of as lowbrow, they now accept. Analysts say that Great Recession! is over, some of them even say it has been over for nearly year and a half, but isn’t recession lasting till all its consequences are gone too? It is probably very naive idea, but talking about growing economy makes me sick every time I see how many people have lost their jobs and how many of them are still unemployed. But it is not only about unemployed Americans. Also those with jobs are shopping for brands, buying at stores and eating at restaurants that they shunned before because they are trying to get more for their money. As Emanuel Weintraub, a New York-based retail consultant said: “The old stigmas are the new realities. Now people do not have a problem saying, ‘I cannot afford it.’” According to him it is a positive “sign of strength.” The question is: for how long?
