Nobel Winners
by Claudia Sonea

In fall we count the gosling, says a Romanian proverb and it is not without reason. After summing up what Obama did since he was elected President, reviewing the status of the economic crisis or the fourth quarter reports, now we take a closer look at this year’s Nobel Prize winners. Last week the Nobel Prize in Literature stirred controversies for being given to a writer whose works recount the hardships suffered under the communist regime. As a matter of fact the winners were announced starting October the 5th with the Nobel prize in Medicine and Psychology which this year was given to Elizabeth H. Blackburn, ! Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase. The next day Charles K. Kao, Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith were announced as the winners in Physics, then the prize in Chemistry went to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome. If we talked in the beginning of Obama, why not mention that he received the Peace prize for the striving to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. Although, there were people who fought harder and longer then Obama for peace, the juries decided to give to the US President. Why is that? It is a question that will probably remain without answer as many others that revolve around the Nobel Prize. Two Americans, Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson, continued the series of 23 prize in Economic Science. Moreov! er, Elinor added to the other 4 women winners of this yearR! 17;s Nob el, thus establishing a new record for the female gender. Stay connected and you will find out more. Enjoy!
