Solar versus Coal?

People are liable to think big. Many of their thoughts and ideas are just utopian. World with no anger and violence is the first and more common one. The other is an image of clean world – no heavy industry, no pollution, no global warming. But is it really so utopian? What if we already have a clue how to manage it? Of course, it is more than needed to realize, that every good idea was small at the beginning and its realization as well. The bright example that also “utopian” ideas can be real comes from Durango, Colorado. Shaw brothers decided to convert old arts building and community center into something more useful – a miniature solar power plan! t. They did it two years ago, but they can already say it was really good idea! Even though this solar power plant produces only a small fraction of the region’s electricity, it is in the frame to improve it as La Plata County in southwestern Colorado would like to shift to cleaner sources of energy. What is more, this kind of energy is offered with tax credits and rebates what can be more than attractive for smaller businesses and clients. The one who should be afraid now are the natural gas pumps. They are the single largest source of heat-trapping pollution in the locality of La Plata County. But as said Christi Zeller, the executive director of the La Plata Energy Council, the reality is that we still need natural gas. Everything has its pros and cons: while solar is better than gas as it is renewable source, natural gas is a cleaner-burning alternative to coal and it is on the other hand cheaper than solar. Maybe all the ideas are not so utopian and even though w! e cannot stop destruction of our planet, we definitely can slo! w it.
