Google wages “a war for talent”
by Zuzana Zelenakova
The internet giant Google has always been considered one of the most employee friendly companies in the world. Now, due to what the company called “a war for talent” in the technology industry all 23,000 Google employees around the world are getting 10 percent pay hike. "We believe we have the best employees in the world. Period. The brightest, most capable group of this size ever assembled," Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, said in the message to staff. "We want to make sure that you feel rewarded for your hard work. We want to continue to attract the best people to Google." In addition, the staff will get also a holiday bonus of $1,000. The thing is Go! ogle leadership is worried about young talented people leaving the company in order to join rivals such as Facebook for example. It is estimated that about 10 percent of Facebook employees are originally from Google. That includes also several top executives. The raises are expected to become effective in January. Even though Google did not confirm the news directly, it issued an e-mail statement that reads: "While we don't typically comment on internal matters, we do believe that competitive compensation plans are important to the future of the company." Google has several techniques to motivate its employees, one of them being Innovation Time Off that enables Google engineers to spend twenty percent of their work time on projects that they find interesting. This policy seems to bear fruit as about half of new Google products are result of Innovation Time Off. Google´s philosophy involves some very sympathetic principles such as "you can make money without doing evi! l," "you can be serious without a suit," and "work should be c! hallengi ng and the challenge should be fun." Well, who would not want to work for Google?
