BP sells assets to collect money for the cleaning process
by Zivka Deleva

Whenever a man is in a financial crises turns to what he has as a fortune and contemplates how to come out of the problems. The second stage is to sell what can so he will have money to solve the situation. The same thing happens to the British Petroleum, the most actual company in the last few months that was responsible for the biggest oil spill in the history of the mankind, that happened in the Gulf of Mexico. BP decided to sell several major assets to the Apache Corporation for about 7 billion dollars, so the British could pay for the costs needed for the cleaning of the Gulf. Another 3 billion dollars are needed for the cleaning process to be successful. In one week! the oil and gas company that operates in the US, Apache Corps. is going to give cash to the BP. The oil fields and gas processing plants in Texas and southeast New Mexico that are worth 3.1 billion dollars are among the assets that BP is selling. When you have conscience worries you must try to wash it out. That is what BP is trying to do, though it is so small part of what kind of damage is going to stay in the area around the Gulf. We should try and imagine people that live nearby, that have to stand up the bad smell and the black streets and beaches, and more of that, who is going to refund for the living world in the sea and some species that are already gone because of the disaster? By far, the company has given around 4 billion dollars for the first phase of the cleaning up of the oil. - The board believes that there are opportunities to divest assets which are strategically more valuable to other parties than they are to BP - the Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg sa! id.

Airbus versus Boeing - again!
by Barbora Misakova

When one is criticizing another one, he is usually doing it just to hide a reason for which he could be criticized as well. Competition between Airbus and Boeing which is sometimes referred to as the “Airliner Wars” is a bright example of this hide-and-criticize tactic. Competition between two companies of the large jet airliner market has longed for years now as each company regularly accuses the other of receiving unfair state aid from their respective governments. While Boeing has continually protested over launch aid in form of credits to Airbus, Airbus has claimed that Boeing receives illegal subsidies through military and research contracts and tax breaks.! There is no surprise that both companies are fighting for supremacy at the market especially when there is the U.S. Air Force’s contract worth up to $50 billion. The European Airbus parent company EADS submitted a formal bid on Thursday and believes it will prove the “unequaled capabilities” of its tanker, which is based on the Airbus A330 passenger plane. EADS presented its proposal on more than 8,800 pages a day before the deadline for bids. Chairman of EADS North America, Ralph Crosby said: “We feel very god about what we have to offer.” But EADS shouldn’t speak too soon. The World Trade Organization announced a delay because of alleged aid to Boeing and The European Union together with Airbus have nothing better to do than criticize the delay. The tanker contest is a rerun of a previous competition won by EADS but later overturned on appeal from Boeing which successfully argued that the selection process was unfair.

Airbus verzus Boeing - zas a znova!
by Barbora Misakova

Hoci predseda EADS pre Severnú Ameriku, Ralph Crosby povedal: „Sme veľmi spokojní s tým, čo môžeme ponúknuť“, EADS by nemal predbiehať udalosti. Svetová obchodná organizácia oznámila, že bude nutné projekt odložiť na neurčito kvôli údajným dotáciám Boeingu. Európska Únia spolu s Airbusom samozrejme s týmto krokom nesúhlasia, no momentálne nemôžu robiť nič, len čakať.

by Barbora Misakova

Bankers' bonuses to be curbed
by Barbora Misakova

As it is said, nothing lasts forever and the financial crisis that hit the whole world proves it. In the times when everyone is recovering from this tremendous financial shock, the European Parliament comes with new decision which will change a lot. On Wednesday the EU parliament approved limits on banker bonuses from January. These limits are drawing the ire of the banking industry which sees these restrictions as a point when the Europe’s competitiveness is undermined. What is more, banking industry considers these limits as beneficial for rival global financial centers from Wall Street to Hong Kong. The European Parliament is defending by blaming unrestricted banke! r bonuses for causing the global financial crisis and by calling these reforms as preventing against a repetition of the financial crisis which brought the global economy to its knees. Pascal Canfin, a Green MP from France, said the bonuses were “the most ambitious in the world” and would end “extravagant bonuses synonymous with extravagant risks.” Limits set by EU Parliament will mean a far lower proportion of cash in the bonus, with much less payable up-front. From January 2011, 60 percent of bonuses should be variable and for future payment only. Cash payments are capped at up to 30 percent of the total bonus. Michel Barnier, EU financial services commissioner, said the banks will need to “change radically their practices and the mentality that have led in many cases to excessive risk-taking and contributed to the financial crisis.” The EU Parliament voted 594-24 in favor of the legislation.

Toyota again!
by Barbora Misakova

History is repeating! Most of you probably remember the case of Toyota Motor Corporation very well. Three separate but related recalls of automobiles by this corporation occurred at the end of 2009 and start of 2010. First two recalls were initiated with the assistance of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, when several vehicles experienced unintended acceleration. While first recall was connected with floor mat which should had allegedly caused pedal entrapment, the second recall was begun after some crashes were shown not to have been caused by floor mat incursion. Toyota Motor Corporation had to announce huge recalls. Total number of cars recalled by! this company stood at 9 million. Today Japanese automaker says it could not rule out another mass recall. As informed Toyota on Thursday, an engine fault is affecting eight models of its luxury Lexus and Crown sedans. These faults are potentially requiring a global recall that could affect up to 270,000 units. As said Hideto Zukawa, Toyota spokesman: “The defective engines, whose valve springs are not working properly, may halt in the worst case scenario while driving.” As Toyota has been hit by a series of safety recalls and has been blamed for more than 80 deaths in the USA, it is very cautious now. What is more, record 16.4-million-dollar fine is the last thing which company with a record annual net loss of $4.2 billion needs, especially when US officials have refused to rule out the possibility of more fines. Japanese auto giant is also facing a host of lawsuits over “unintended acceleration” issues, which may yet dent the future profitability o! f the company.
