German Quality
by Claudia Sonea

In Romania there is a general opinion that all German products are the best and the German quality is worthy of all the money invested. Thus, Romanians prefer German products, especially when it comes to cars and motorcycles. The BMW brand is highly appreciated and some would even pay half of their salary every month just to own a BMW car. Let’s see why anyone would starve just to have a BMW. First of all is the resistance to time, to constant use, to bad roads, the smooth feeling of driving such good products like a car or a motorcycle. The company also offers a warranty that is more than satisfying every ! demand and they do take good care of their customers. For instance, BMW launched in 2004 the model K 1200 GT and now they recall 122,000 motorcycles from all over the world, after discovering brake problems. This happened in spite of the fact that the company is currently facing hard times as sales plunged due to the financial crisis, as Motors Liquidation Company sued it over gearbox supply contract. As it is proves that BMP would rather lose some money than the customer’s trust in the brand. Few car manufacturers would have acknowledged the faulty system and even fewer would have taken back the faulty motorcycles. However, as the Germans are men of their words and they invest in their products hard work and try permanently to improve them with the purpose of enhancing customer’s experience. The question that remains is whether the owners of the 122,000 K 1200 GT motorcycles will either receive their m! oney back, either they will get a new one. Don’t go away! , this d efinitely will have a follow up.

EU – Mercosur group free trade talks.
by Milota Sidorova

In the time when euro zone leaders as well as EU politicians try to prolong the agony of the common currency, it seems the old rules and bans are just about to fail. Words from Spanish Premier Jose Luis Zapatero meant one of the first long-term business borders would either lost or lowered. Mercosur group which consists of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay have formally reopened talks about free trade between Latin America states and EU.According Zapatero, breaking the ban that was established in 2004 would be a positive answer to the crisis Europe is facing. The amount of export between continental regions would assume extra five billion euro (6.2 billion dollars). E! xport from developing countries is a big and complicated issue. Most of them are really very poor and the goods, rich countries depend on are sold very cheap. These rich countries make rules that eliminate export of ready to sell products for example – chocolate or cotton clothes. They allow to sell just the basic goods – for example cocoa beans, bananas or cotton. The next proceeding is under competition of rich countries (that of course make more money on it). This way, developing world has been suffering from bans and wasn't allowed to play under equall and fair-play conditions. For now, nobody knows details of this action – what would be conditions of the trade. Even if it is speaking of free trade, it won't be as liberal as it's been proclaimed. One is sure – it would be good chance for some Latin-American businessmen to make more money in Europe and it would be potential chance for European businessmen to fullfill Latin-America with their goods.! But since Europe has been more dependent on foreign products,! it is p ossible free trade would not be balanced at all.

The British Airlines crew doesn't give up
by Zivka Deleva

The five-day strike in the British Airways ended today. The High Court from London brought a decision that the cabin crew should return to work and everything to go back where it stopped. The air company main argument in front of the Court was that there had been an irregularity in the ballot of airline staff by the Unite Union. The crew isn’t accepting yet the decision and expect for more talking. According to the Union, this decision represents a "landmark attack on free trade unionism and the right to take industrial action". They plan to appeal the injunction. This is for the second time that the High Court in only six months has granted an injunction only after ! an announcement for a strike. Since today there will be no more delaying of the flights and the passengers will no longer be nervous. The crew was protesting because with similar injunctions the freedom of expression was destructed and against the Human Rights Act from 1998 of the European Convention. The Unite is not going to give up the fight and on Thursday is going to ask for a new court decision which they say it is unbelievable and not accept the one that forbids them to strike. The company’s fact is that the Unite made a technical mistake with the way they tried to organize the strike. "It does bring into question whether we have a right to strike in this country," – said Tony Woodley, joint head of the union. He explains that just because the Union didn’t inform 11 of its 11.000 members, that didn’t give the company a right to stop the striking procedure. The both sides dispute over pay, after BA decided to save 62.5 million pounds a ye! ar to get along with the bad demand and the bigger competition! .

GM reports first post-bankruptcy profit!
by Barbora Misakova

General Motors has a cause for celebration. This U.S. automaker which manufactures cars and trucks in 34 countries and sells and services vehicles in some 140 countries had serious problems in the past. Economic recession struck this auto giant and US government had to play a game called victim and savior. In 2009 it had reported loss of 4.3 billion dollars and so it was reorganized and now is General Motors temporarily majority owned by the United States Treasury. Under the Troubled Asset Relief Program the US government invested a total of $57.6 billion just to help the company out of mud. On April 21, 2010 General Motors announced it had paid back the entire amount of th! e US and Canadian government loans with interest. A total amount was $8.1 billion. According to their latest statement on Monday, company is doing well even with profit! GM reported yesterday their quarterly profit for the first time in three years is nearly 900 million dollars! As expressed Chris Liddell, General Motors vice chairman and chief financial officer: “We are pleased with our first-quarter performance, in particular achieving profitability.” And there is no surprise as in its first-quarter in 2009 stockholders reached $5.98 billion loss. This year a net income attributable to stockholders reached 865 million dollars, and that is really a different cup of coffee! And what are their plans for the future? Chris Liddell said: “In North America we are adding production to keep up with strong demand for new products in our four brands.” So good luck, GM!

British Airways face another round of strikes
by Zuzana Zelenakova

British Airways cabin crew union announced dates of new strikes, from May 18-22, May 24-28, May 30-June 3 and finally June 5-9. The Unite union representing the cabin crew refused a deal proposed by the airlines earlier this month with 81 percent of present crew members voting against. The Unite informed that 71 percent of all the cabin crew it represents voted. The announced walkout will affect not only half-term holidays passengers but also football fans planning on a trip to South Africa for the World Cup. "There can be no industrial peace without meaningful negotiations and while management victimises trade unionists and uses disciplinary procedures in a witch-hunt," s! aid the Unite officials Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley in a statement. "The seven days' notice period is sufficient time for BA management to do the sensible thing and reopen meaningful negotiations." Gatwick and City airports should operate as usual during the strikes. The company also informed that most of its long-haul flights will be provided from Heathrow airport. This is just another slap for British Airways after the airspace over the United Kingdom was closed for six days last months due to volcanic ash cloud from erupting volcano on Iceland. According to Chief Financial Officer Keith Williams, the closure cost the carrier about 100 million pounds. When it comes to the Unite´s rejection of the latest offer British Airlines stated it was “disappointed but not surprised.” "We urge Unite to put an end to this unnecessary dispute and focus on the best interests of its members. There can be nothing positive to be gained from further strikes," announced t! he airline company in a statement. "Unlike other businesses an! d airlin es, we have avoided compulsory redundancies. Cabin crew face no pay cut or reduction in terms and conditions, and remain the best rewarded in the UK airline industry."

by Zuzana Zelenakova

by Zuzana Zelenakova

1 million iPads sold in record time
by Zuzana Zelenakova

One month ago Apple Inc. launched its latest gadget iPad and it has had an enormous success so far. Apple has already sold one million of them in 28 days. During the first day the company sold 300,000 iPads including preorders. “One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.” It should be added that next versions of iPhone such as the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS the similar sales during their first w! eekend. However, iPad represents a whole new category which has not been very known among the customers. Therefore its success is even more impressive. In addition, more than 12 million applications have been downloaded by iPad users and about 1.5 million e-books have been sampled at the iBook store. As the demand still outmatches the supply Apple decided to postpone the European launch of the product until the end of May. International preorders will begin May 10. Early sales of iPad, that is marketed by Apple as most flexible multi-functional consumption device, exceeded expectations of Wall Street analysts too. They predict Apple to sell about 5 million iPads this year. "In many respects, we are encouraged that the international roll-out will not begin until May, which will sustain strong sales in the September quarter and throughout 2010,“ stated BMO Capital markets analyst Keith Bachman. The iPad comes in three sizes: 16, 32 and 64 GB. It starts at $499 for 16GB,! 32GB for $599, and $699 64GB. There is added $130 per model f! or 3G ve rsions, so that the most expensive model, 64GB/3G, costs $829.
