Mattel is going to recall some more toys soon Corina Ciubotaru

The toy industry in the U.S. is now facing a crisis. Mattel has announced a recall of toys for the third time this year and that it continues to test its products for high lead content. The company has previously recalled hundreds of thousands of toys due to the lead levels in the paint and because they contained small magnets that kids can swallow. Lead poisoning causes severe nausea or even brain disease and death in small children. The stores that removed the toys from the market are Toys "R" Us and Wal-Mart, which have started their own investigations in this scandal. Toy maker Hasbro has also recalled some toys, including the legendary Easy Bake ovens, but says it has very strict rules about quality standards in its products. They have also taken less damage from this action than Mattel, who now has to deal with tainted Barbie accessories. Also, Mattel's Fisher Price division has had to recall part of the Thomas & Friends sets due to lead in the paint so things could not be worse. In the middle of this scandal are the Chinese companies that manufacture the toys. The manager of one of them committed suicide a few weeks ago because he new that his company's involvement in the lead poisoning is going to ruin business. And it seems he was right, as the world is watching Chinese companies much closer now and the confidence level in them is falling. But as long as kids are involved, no security measure is too great.

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Blu-ray beats HD DVD in sales any day
by Corina Ciubotaru

Blu-ray discs or BDs are the newest kind of storage devices, with five times as much space available as DVDs. They use a different technology than DVDs in their players, a special kind of laser, to be exact, and are being used mostly for storing high-quality movies. Some film studios like Sony, MGM or Disney, only release new movies on Blu-ray discs. Their rivals are HD DVDs of course and now that Blockbuster announced it would sell only Blu-ray movies in over a thousand of its stores, the HD DVD supporters got really mad. Not surprising, as Blu-ray discs had outsold HD-DVDs by two to one in April, when the 1 millionth BD left the shelf. Later on Sony Blu-ray sales increased by 1000 percent until early July, following PS3's successful launch in Europe. Sony expects Blu-ray player sales to be better than those of last year by six or even seven times. Even if the player for these discs is more expensive than the one for HD DVD, it's more attractive to consumers due to the larger amount of data it can carry, which ranges from 25GB on a single-layer disc, to 200GB in estimated capacity. Blu-ray discs are more expensive to create, but because of a new technology they incorporate, they are more resistant and harder to scratch. Whether producers were right to be so confident in the new disc's success, only time will tell. But the astonishing number of important companies involved in developing and marketing this little product should be proof enough of its qualities.

To install Windows Vista, or not to install it? That is the question.
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

I don't use Windows Vista. I don't have a serious reason, I'm just very used to my Windows XP. I didn't even tried to find out how it looks when it first broke into the market on January 30.I got a glimpse of it last month, at a friend's house and I was impressed. It was so different from what I thought it looked like. I haven't bought it but perhaps I will soon. It's tempting in a way to acquire something that sold in 60 million copies since its release and that surpassed in the first five weeks of its release the total number of Apple installations.Microsoft made $50 billion- a first in the history of the company. When you look at this data you are bound to think that it is a really good product. You are bound to think Microsoft is really the leader on the market. This is what would keep me from acquiring Vista. It's like acquiring the latest most fashionable cell phone, or the latest creation from Versace- a trend, something you can live without, dispensable.Maybe I'll go Vintage and install the old Windows 3.1 on my PC just because I don't really like the way Microsoft COO Kevin Turner is lavishing praise. Is really Microsoft the best thing out there or are they keeping younger companies out of the market?

MySpace is becoming a safer place
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

We all have to salute a wonderful initiative. As we al know sex offenders have flocked MySpace, bullys have terrorized kids online, a large sort of obscene content has circled MySpace.Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd has created an account on MySpace. His page is : http://www.myspace.com/polkcountysheriffsoffice.I think it was about time someone applied the old saying "Can't beat them, join them!"MySpace was initially a place where new bands promoted themselves. It soon became a social network where people link to each other, united by the same interests. If children and teens will link to the sheriff's page, a golden star will appear on their page and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd thinks this will scare off a part of the sex offenders. It would be funny if one of the MySpace creeps offends the Sheriff. He already has 297 friends, among are included: Law Enforcement Cadaver Dogs, Inc , Miami-Dade Police Department, Officer Memorial and Kids Come First Florida.MySpace users seems to enjoy this initiative if you check out the comments on the sheriff's page. For example: "Thank you for the add! Thanks from Orange County, Florida!"( Jul 28 2007 7:39A ), " Thanks for the add and keep up the great work and keeping kids safe online"( Jul 27 2007 8:23A ), and other 26 positive comments.Perhaps the sheriff will tell the kids how nice is to go out and breath fresh air and play football with real friends. Or maybe it's to soon to ask this...I'm sure MySpace would resent it though.

Penny coin collection sold for $10.7 million
by Zuzana Moravcova

Friday night, visitors of the Heritage Auction Galleries in Californian Long Beach became eye witnesses of an incredible 'bidding war' between the major US coin collectors. They were offering hundreds of thousands of dollars to gain the yet most valued penny collection. The collection of 301 cents features some of the rarest and earliest examples of the American penny. It is an acquisition of coins that are attractive and pleasant representatives with exceptional pedigrees. presents a major hurdle across a wide range of dates in the large cent field. One of the most significant and rare pieces was a cent minted at the newly opened Philadelphia Mint in 1793 for two weeks, but then it was abandoned, because Congress said Lady Liberty looked frightened. This historical coin, a collector's treasure, added the biggest value to the whole collection, which was finally sold for 10.7 million dollars. The collection includes nearly every Sheldon die variety in the 1793-1814 series, including many Mint State pieces and numerous Condition Census examples.Heritage Auction president Greg Rohan said the auction was the biggest ever for a penny collection, with hundreds of bidders vying for the coins. The presale value of the collection was estimated at about $7 million."It was a fabulous night," Rohan said. "Every major coin collector of American cents was either there in person, bidding online or on the telephone."The collection had been in ownership of Walter J. Husak, who started collecting the coins when he was 13. In summer seasons, he was working on a farm to help his grandmother, and started to buy different old coins, some of which he later sold to a local coin shop.

Bizarre holidays more preferred
by Martina Harvanova

Have you ever thought about an idea of establishing a holiday of an unique manner? You have certainly heard about various kinds of feast that people celebrate in different countries, but maybe you still haven't had the opportunity to discover it or to take part of it. So, here are just a few examples how you can embellish your calender and the regular days in a year. While the Americans are trying to look like they are celebrating two of the most influential men in their history, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, on the Presidents Day which is traditionally a part of the third Monday in February, some more bizarre but sincere holidays are becoming a serious part of some people's lives. The U. S. public usually coalesce the federal holiday in February and the seductive shopping opportunities as many stores are used to hold sales. Although a day off from work connected with the Presidents day delights mostly everyone and consequently, Americans are thankful to both presidents, the proper value of the day vanishes, to be frank. Maybe some of them shop in order to cheer the dead state officials and to remind themselves how great they established the country when the public doesn't sense any shortage of goods, but the percentage of the ones who conceive the Presidents Day as mentioned is supposedly minute.Among other bizarre feasts, I noticed some that are worth to depict. Because the following month will arrive in a few days and you have still a chance to prepare, I'll offer you some March holidays' celebrations you can join. Already the first March' day is remembered as a National Pig Day and as a substitution for vegetarians it is also a Peanut Butter Lover's Day. It is not hard to imagine what the worshipers usually do this day & eating peanut butter, reading peanut butter poems, coloring their faces with it and maybe competing in cooking the best sample of the delicacy. To continue listing the holidays based on food, we must mention March, 6th, as it's a day of all frozen food fans. Nine days later you have the opportunity to think about yourself a bit, because of Everything You Think Is Wrong Day. Probably, people organize various meetings and discussions where they try to teach you something about the science, the branch most of us have wrong or no information about, and convince you that you are absolutely wrong in all knowledges, assumptions and thought of yours. However, not to disappoint yourself and to add you more self-esteem, the following day you can celebrate Everything You Do Is Right Day. Not to forget, also National Organize Your Home Office Day belong to the one of the most unique holidays.Although commemoration of days of important leaders and key situations in the history is inevitable and crucial, the though to remind the public of such ordinary day-to-day stuff such as our love to peanut butter should be more present. Nevertheless, the common things are the most amazing ones.

Invitation to a partnership
by Claudia Sonea

European aerospace group EADS announced at the beginning of the year that it plans a restructuring plan called "Power8" that involves the selling of six Airbus plants from Europe. Until recently on the auction block were two sites in Germany, at Laupheim and Varel, a factory in France at Saint-Nazaire-Ville and three other factories from France (Meaulte), Britain (Filton) and Germany (Nordenham) will be jointly operated by subcontractors. Now, the group has announced that it is evaluating the inclusion of Augsburg plant, the single biggest supplier of Airbus aerostructures, to the sales process of Airbus aerostructures sites. Situated in the southern German region of Bavaria provides he main structures that make up the group's aircraft. As an invitation to a partnership, the group said that a major partner owing Nordenham, Varel and Augsburg would represent a risk for Airbus. 10,000 jobs, including 3,700 in Germany will be cut due to the financial losses produced by the delays of A380 superjumbo project. Because of the management instability, operational difficulties and the euro that is becoming stronger every day, the company finds hard and expensive to extend on the international markets. There is nothing sure and the confirmation of Augsburg selling was not made yet. The European aerospace group is still debating on this subject, but because of the current situation it is more likely to happen. Until further notice, stay connected and surf for more information. Enjoy!

Oil prices rocket high

The next luxurious thing will probably be a car, not to mention the plane. If we take a closer look at the increase rate of the oil prices, we can see that we will afford less and less to fuel our car. In spite the fact that on Thursday a government report showing that the nation's crude oil supplies rose more than expected last week led to a slight fall in oil price, gas prices rose more than 3 cents overnight. According to the Energy Department's Information Administration crude oil inventories rose by 4.2 million barrels last week that is above the 2.9 million barrel increase forecasted by analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires, while supplies of distillates fell by 4.5 million barrels. Opinions on the oil price increase are divided, if many analysts think that due to the rising supplies and the falling demand noted in a number of recent reports oil prices are bound fall, there are others take into account that prices have spiked in recent days on buying fueled in part by investors attracted to the oil market by the falling dollar, therefore they expect gas prices to peak this spring well above last May's record of $3.227 a gallon. Like Tim Evans, an analyst at Citigroup Inc. in New York, says it, the difference of opinion leads to an unstable market. On the New Yorl Mercantile Exchange light, sweet crude for April delivery fell $1.47 to settle at $98.23 a barrel, while March oil reached a record high of $100.74 and a new trading record of $101.32 before expiring Wednesday. Furthermore, AAA and the Oil Price Information Service revealed that retail gas prices rose 3.3 cents Thursday to a national average of $3.086 a gallon, mostly due to the switch over from winter-grade gasoline to the more expensive summer-grade gas (summer grade gasoline designed to reduce pollution trades as much as 15 cents higher). Tom Kloza, publisher and chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service in Wall, N.J, states that retailers are just trying to make up the difference and to assure that their pumps and tanks are completely clear of winter-grade gas by June 1 when the government requires summer fuel to be sold. Gasoline supplies rose also to a 14-year high with March gasoline futures settling at $2.522 a gallon on the Nymex Thursday, which could limit spring price increases. April Brent crude futures settled at $96.24 a barrel in London on the ICE Futures exchange. All this warns us to pay more attention to where we go and how much it will cost us, all our lives being nowadays conditioned by oil and gas.

Virgin America takes off
by Notme dfsfs

Wednesday, the first Virgin America planes took off to the sky linking its San Francisco hub with New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles. The airline is part owned and founded by the UK billionaire Richard Branson. He was received very well by his employees with applause and whistles."Virgin (America) will make a real difference. Some American airlines have not prided themselves on quality in the sky," he said.Flies for Washington, Las Vegas and other cities are expected to be coming soon, the company has almost 500 employees, and they're expecting to hire more as the routes expand. One customer said about their service: "their small counter at LAX terminal 6 was literally overflowing with employees. I guess they really want to speed passengers through check-in and my check-in only took 30 seconds."They promised to have a wireless connection as soon as the FCC will give them approval to start the service. With cheap prices, Virgin America is a very fearful rival with other domestic carriers like Southwest Airlines Co. and JetBlue Airways Corp.Mike Boyd, a consultant at The Boyd Group, based in Evergreen, Colorado said: "If you're going to start an airline, right now may be the best time ╉ everybody's full and there's limited ability to competitively respond."

Google in action
by Claudia Sonea

Until last year Google rarely shut down services that did not seem to bring any profit. In November 2006, the company had to give up a service that answered user's questions through hired researchers. According to the last press release they will now close a service that sold and rented online videos. This project that they started 19 months ago proved to be useless because of the existence of free clips on other Web sites like its subsidiary, YouTube. The entire purpose was to develop an advertising format to capitalize on the online video popularity. Google's earnings are mostly from ads, most of them are text-based messages posted alongside search results or written content on the Web. In order to bring the advertising to a whole new level, Google bought last year YouTube for $1.76 billion. An effective advertising system for video ads is expected to be settled by the end of the year, making the new acquisition to be the center of the company's expansion into video advertising. The service originally created for video advertising sold and rented videos including sports, music and news. To compensate the customers who paid to watch videos indefinitely (the price was from a couple of bucks to 20 dollars), according Gabriel Strickler, Google spokesman, there will be created credits that can be used for online payments through its online payment service, Checkout. This way the company will not be affected in any way and the customers will be content in getting their money back. Surf on and check for your money!

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Mattel recalls millions more toys
by Notme dfsfs

In less than two weeks, Mattel the largest toy maker in the world reported Tuesday a second major recall of its toys. They warned the parents that more than 18.6 million toys sold globally and made in China might contain tiny magnets and lead paint.Nancy Nord, acting chairwoman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said: "There is absolutely no excuse for lead to be found in toys entering this country. It is totally unacceptable and it needs to stop. This agency is going to take whatever action it needs to take to address that problem aggressively."This second recall raises many questions about the quality and the safety of products made in China and now retailers are worried that sales of their Chinese-made products will drop. Mattel declared that they voluntarily recalled 18.2 million Polly Pocket, Doggie Day Care, Batman, Barbie and One Piece toys. These toys might contain small magnets and if they're swallowed by children, the magnets connect in their intestines causing blockage that can be fatal."Consumers should immediately take these products away from their children and contact Mattel to arrange for a return and to receive a replacement toy of the consumer's choice, up to the value of the returned product," Mattel statement said.

Visa offers the largest IPO in US history
by Zuzana Moravcova

Visa gave details Monday about an initial public offering that could raise up to nearly $19 billion. If it works, it could be the largest initial public offering in U.S. history, and also represent an encouraging sign to the stock markets. The banks issuing Visa cards are expected to note a total windfall of more than $10 billion, but Visa's IPO will only have little effect on credit cardholders."That's a good thing for the banks, and a good thing for consumers. It might help ease the credit crisis a bit," said marketing director at the card information web site, Ben Woolsey. As well as MasterCard, Visa has been shifting from being a privately held interest to a publicly traded company. Following its rival, Visa will offer 406 million shares at $37 to $42 each, as the representatives claimed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday. The San Francisco-based company has been planning to get the IPO done this year since a filing in June. But according to IPO research firm Renaissance Capital, based in Greenwich, Connecticut, it is believed that the offering will price on March 19 and begin trading the next day. Woolsey thinks that delaying the IPO process would "be like turning around a massive steamship, and could raise speculation about what's wrong," However, demand for IPOs has been incredibly weak recently, reflecting nervousness of the investors. Despite the housing-led credit squeeze, threatening consumers' spending and their ability to keep up with debt payments, Visa expects to see high demand for its stock "It shows that there is a belief that investors want to put new capital to work in this company," said Kathy Smith, a principal at Renaissance Capital.

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: American consumers in a "gap"
by Lenka Lehenova

We all know about economic depression in USA. It is not a new but do you know what everything it influences? There are a lot of factors which depend on USA as very strong country. For example the price of oil which is still jumping because the value of dollar. Oil prices exceed $100 a barrel that is a historic record. This "black gold" is very important and we all need it but today there is not enough of it. USA is in a "gap" but economists, analysts and also government try to help and change this situation. Stagflation is the other effect of recession. It is a macroeconomics term used to describe a period which is combinated with stagnation and inflation. Stagnation is typical for economic recession, it means slow economic growth and rising unemployment and that exactly is the situation of USA. It is very tearful that mostly inhabitants suffer by it. There is harder to find a job and paysheets are still the same without the raise. People are losing their job because wary employers eliminated jobs in January and that is the first nationwide loss of jobs in more than four years.People are distressed from rising prices and reduction of wages. It influences businesses because costumers' demand is declining. Consumers wages are down 1.4 percent from a year ago but they have to pay more for their needs especially for heating homes and filling up gas tanks because prices paid by them are up 4.1 percent. This is the biggest increase in 17 years. In the moment there is very important to keep inflation under control and achieve economic growth. It is the mission of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and his colleagues who monitor the inflation situation very carefully.

Delta-Northwest combination fails so far
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Delta Air Lines, Inc. is an United States airline that covers extensive domestic and international network. It flies to over 332 destinations in 57 countries and across 5 continents. It is ranked as the second largest airline in the world as far as number of passengers carried is concerned. In January, 2008 it was reported that the company held merger talks with Northwest Airlines and United Airlines. Atlanta-based carrier picked Northwest Airlines for further talks. Both carriers are still recovering from bankruptcy. A potential combination transaction that would meet Delta's expectations has not been reached yet. The thing is the pilots unions were not able to achieve an agreement over an integrating seniority lists. Other conditions such as that the combined airline would be called Delta or the headquarters in Atlanta have been already met except for this one. Delta's executives announced in the memo: "Rest assured that we will not complete a transaction unless all of these conditions are met. We have a strong stand-alone plan. We will maintain our attention on executing the plan while we continue to look at strategic alternatives." The question of pilot integration have certainly threatened the negotiations but both sides are still involved despite the public silence in recent days. Airline experts and insiders have always been skeptic about this partnership given the state of both companies. "Two airlines in bankruptcy do not make one profitable airline outside of bankruptcy," said Mike Miller, partner with aviation consulting firm the Velocity Group. But let's wait and see..

IBM buying back billions of shares
by Zuzana Moravcova

There are still some companies out there with financial muscle, said the computer giant IBM Corp. to investors, and approved a multi-billion dollar stock buyback. The company is going to spend $15 billion on share repurchases, in addition to over $400 million left over from a previous authorization.IBM is enabled to take this step after Tuesday's decision by the board of directors, which had authorized a continuation of its massive stock buyback program. Its shares therefore jumped almost 4 percent. The firm's represenatives said that the buyback would raise its earnings for 2008 past Wall Street's prior forecasts, and its aggressive stock repurchases are expected to continue in the coming years. However, the stocks consumer confidence index has fallen in February, according to Conference Board private research group. It has recorded a reading of 75.0 in February, compared to 87.3 in January, and stocks had traded lower in morning trading. The same poll found that confidence of American consumers hit its lowest level since November 1993, disregarding an exception from five years ago, when US forces toppled the government of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein."With so few consumers expecting conditions to turnaround in the months ahead, the outlook for the economy continues to worsen and the risk of a recession continues to increase," said the director of the Conference Board's consumer research center, Lynn Franco. This new repurchase authorization appears after I.B.M. reported strong fourth-quarter results in January, and gave a 2008 an expectations-topping outlook, saying growth abroad would repair the American economy, that is slowly becoming weaker."The market is kind of overcoming negative news, which is potentially a next step toward higher prices," said senior technical strategist at Schaeffer's Investment Research, Ryan Detrick."At least in the short-term, it's a nice change here."

The American problems with economy

The American economy is discouraged by debilitating recession and destructive inflation. The situation is getting worse since last summer when the credit situation started getting worse. There are predictions that the economic activity of the American market will continue to weaken in next quaters. Ben Bernanke, Chairman of Fed, suggested reductions of interest rate, which should revive the economy. They should come in March. This should get ahead of the curve on a squeeze of financial market. There is not very optimistic situation in oil or food prices. The Congress needs to find out more far-reaching solutions to solve this situation. It might include direct and costly govermnet measures. The main problem seemed to be too long waiting to began solving economic problems. Now can occure a situation that falling house prices could affect consumer spending and finantial markets. Bernanke said he would try to avoid a confidence crisis. Early intervention will simplify to contain after-effects. Anyway there are people who think that existing problems should be solved stepwise. Right now, the biggest danger is the recession of the economy, not the inflation. And it should be solved as fast as possible. Last days showed some perils of an economic stagnation that could be combined with inflation. This situation is comparable with problems of 1970. Bernanke is ready to support using more government power and sources to finish the housing crisis. This should help to buy mortgage-backed securieties from Wall Street Banks at a discount and provide 4 billion dollars to state and local governmants to redevelop homes that were foreclosed. There is a new idea how to help people to aviod foreclosure. It is an bankruptcy relief plan. The negative side is that it might cause higher interest rates.

Oil Worths More Than $100 a Barrel!
by Milota Sidorova

American oil market scores a slow, yet surprising change these days. The increase of 0.9 cent per gallon has come overnight, establishing current national price of $3,161. The report was released by The Oil Price Information Service, completing, that the rate is only 18 cents below the record May 2007, $3,227 per gallon.Despite last week' s circumstances, pointing to the dismail report of The Labour Departement, claiming the increase of 19,000 unemployment benefit applications and the general bungle all over the slowering American market, a jump, according some, a breaking point came out.Looking behind the increase, one must connect the international lowering dollar rate, that as it seems, creates attractive environment for more foreign investors. Let' s count the faithfull Fed promise of cutting rates and Bernake comments that try to imply the American market into a safe distance from stagnating economy and increasing inflation risks. As more and more investors push their money into the sale, the oil race seems to begin. Some analysts now claim ''oil as a real financial instrument.''Passing over a short history review, one may recall the national price of $38 a barrel from early 1980' s. According the estimates, a 1980' s barrel would be worth of at least three times more, reaching from $99.94 to $104. Comparing a different calculating system of those decade, today' s results can be quite blurry to say.The new inflation calculator system was established in 1983. Today The Bueau of Labor Statistics estimates that $38 in 1980 is worth current $97.34, while a Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis calculator puts $38 in 1980 dollars at $99.43. Leaving the history behind, estimates say about an increase of $3.40 even more a gallon for this springtime.Rumours about fundamental operations over the sale yet seem to not influence ."(Fundamentals) have no relationship to price right now," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago. He claimed that, if prices would be hanging over supply and demand of fundamentals, they would be falling.

In memoriam
by Claudia Sonea

Why do all good people die? At the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in suburban Whittier at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday car-building legend Boyd Coddington died without His La Habra office spokeswoman Amanda Curry revealing the cause of the death. His name will be forever attached to hot rod, being the guru of cable TV reality show "American Hot Rod" and the West Coast hot rod. At the age of 13 Coddington started building cars when and while operating a gas station in Utah, set a standard for his creativity, with his popular "Cadzilla", considered a design masterpiece built for rocker Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top based on a 1950s Cadillac, said Dick Messer, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles expressing his admiration. He made fortune from his hobby. At the beginning he was a machinist by trade, working at Disneyland during the day and tinkering with cars in his home garage at night and on weekends. Success came once his work captured the attention of car-crazy Southern Californians, most often customizing 1932 Ford "little deuce coupes". Messer confessed that he did things to hot rods and customs that weren't being done by anyone else and most important he designed cars that were drivable. Coddington was one of the first guys to get into the custom wheel business and his works worth $2,000 apiece, which was unheard of two decades ago. Trying to share his knowledge with others he had alumni like Jesse James and Chip Foose, who went on to open their own shops and star in reality TV shows. Furthermore, he twice won the Daimler-Chrysler Design Excellence Award and he was inducted into the Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Fame, the National Rod & Custom Museum Hall of Fame and the Route 66 Wall of Fame. Those who watched "American Hot Rod" Discovery Channel show, which featured ground-up construction of $500,000 hot rods, could see how committed he was to it and they will always remember his Hawaiian shirt. May his soul rest in peace and his heart run wild with the wheels!

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Mercedes S To Get Lithium-Ion Batteries and I Do Adore Mercedes S
by Kamila Moravcikova

Producer of Mercedes & Daimler AG - said that the lithium-ion battiers will be used in the Mercedes S 400 Blue Hybrid. Isn't that great? In racional point of view one has to say that li-ion battiers are rechargable thanks to lithium ions moving from anode to cathode back and forth. And the racional one has to say that such a battery is smaller but more powerful and it's great that Daimler-Mercedes made this transition from nickel-metal batteries to the li-ion ones as its competitors (GM or Toyota) are about to launch their models of vehicles using this technology as well. This was about candid facts and objective reality. This will be about the subjectives feelings. No doubt, this li-ion affair is cool. But, honestly, it isn't the fact they use such batteries that makes me so excited when somebody mentions Mercedes (especially class S). When I think of Mercedes' sedan I think of its special smell, of that unique sound of engine, of that feeling I immediately get when I sit down and clutch the leather seat. Pure German masterpiece. It has nothing to do with snobbery or addiction to luxury, I think everyone has that special "something" that makes him/her so pleasant and thrilled only by thinkig of it, touching it, being close to it, it's just like special kind of love or obsession.I do love those cars even though it's unlikely I'm gonna get Mercedes anytime soon (with or without li-ion battery). First of all, I'm really bad driver and those cars don't deserve driver like me. I wouldn't be able to park such a huge car by any means! Moreover, I'm completely broke. On the other hand, it not neccessarily means I cannot dream about my sweet Mercedes, nowadays in addition improved by lithium-ion battery.

Oil price record
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Oil prices have been gradually rising since 2003. The price for standard crude oil then was $25 per barrel. Then series of events in 2005 led to oil prices reach $60 per barrel in August and in October 2007 the price rose all of a sudden to $92 per barrel. And finally on February 29 oil prices hit the record number of $103.05 per barrel. The declining nominal value of US dollar should be considered as the main reason. Its weakness also prompted the price go up again to $104 per barrel on Monday, March 3. Analyst predict that the prices are very likely to rise continuously in the upcoming period and remain high for countries with developing economy such as India or China report an increasing demand for it. And what does the Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries, or simply OPEC, say to that? Well, it wishes high but stable price that would be profitable for oil exporting countries and would not have a negative impact on oil consuming countries at the same time. The experts suggest that OPEC would go for something between $70 and $80 per barrel. When it comes to considerations about what effects could long-term rise of the prices have the analysts are rather skeptic and even pessimistic. They fear the whole process might result in recession or worse global oil crash. Not only the price of oil soared as dollar fell, other commodities such as gold, copper and wheat were influenced as well. "It's coming down to another commodity price rally," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp.

Unpleasant gifts
by Lenka Lehenova

I am sure that we all just love gifts. That is nice to get something and know that somebody likes me and wants to sell me on yourself. Maybe some people don't like presents but a lot of them can't wait to get them. If companies want to attract new costumers they will do the same. They offer them different discounts or gifts, for example gift cards. How many of them do you have in your wallet? Haven't you used them yet, have you? And are you sure that they are really right and you can use them every time you want it? Sometimes there could become a problem with these gifts.. If the company wasn't serious, gift could be worthless. Bankruptcy is the biggest fiend of this situation. If retailers file for bankruptcy or go out of business, pieces of plastic called gift cards are at risk. It means more than 75 million dollars this year. The problem is that consumers want to save it and not to spend immediately. If they knew that this was going to happen, they would use them right away. We always do it... and want to save them for worse time but then they could lose their value. The value of the gift cards can be different, mostly about 25-50 dollars. Maybe costumers should think more about their gift cards and spend them as soon as is possible. For many businessmen, it is big annoyance as well because they lost their earnings and maybe a costumers as well. People spent about 26.3 billion dollars in gift cards last year that is still more and more compared with 24.8 and 18.48 billion dollars in years 2006 and 2005. The fact also is that this year is expected the highest number of bankruptcies and liquidations since the 1991 recession. So my suggestion is to use your gift cards immediately and don't think about saving it .

Automakers affliction from February
by Lenka Filipova

Automakers receive the immerse in February as the majority of customers abated their demand due to the increased gas prices as well as the feasible recession. The U.S. automakers suffered very much especially in their highly profitable car sectors, such as trucks, sport utilities and large sedans. This sale drop mainly bothers the car companies like General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. Both autoproducers announced that there was a decline in the February sales. General Motors stated their sales plunged 13 percent. Ford Motor reported 7 percent drop only if it were compared to General Motors. The highest descent of 14 percent was noticed in Chrystler. Toyota's sales slanted by 3 percent.According to Autodata Corp. if the sales form February maintains at this level, it will accumulate 15.4 million units only. This is substantial fall than it was last year, when the sales were 16.6 million units. If the General Motors compared the excellent retail sales from February 2007, it would be really a tough comparison to do. In the second quarter the company cut its production to 1.08 million vehicles by 5 percent. The announcement from Toyota Motor says that the car dales decreased 4 percent in the previous Amonth, where 30 percent slump was seen in Avalon full-size sedan, 25 percent fall in LS 460 sedan, which is a part of Lexus division. As Jesse Toprak, the chief analyst for the auto information site www.edmunds.com, the producers' response is to develop as high incentive spending as possible and in addition to this, this way of behaviour is expected furthermore throughout the summer.

Price Record! Price Record! Price Record!
by Kamila Moravcikova

It wouldn't be for me to live in a policy sphere. There is a lot of people around you, I would better say too much, but is there anyone you can trust in? It's hard to say. When you just see for example candidate you really like and always support as he is talking or dealing with someone you really don't like because for his or her policy, reforms or statements, you probably start to think about his faithfulness. And what if this wrong person publicly says he is going to support your candidate? What would you think about it? Would you be loyal voter and stay with your candidate or not? And what if you were a presidential candidate and have this kind of dilemma? In this weird world of politicians you never know what you can expect. In this particular situation is also presidential candidate John McCain. His newest supporter is no one else than George W. Bush. It looks that both of them are satisfied. While Bush says: "John showed incredible courage, strength of character and perseverance in order to get to this moment and that's exactly what we need in a president" McCain said he appreciates Bush's endorsement and his service to the U.S. and added he wanted to have Bush at his side on the campaign trail. Well it looks they are really saying the truth and both really satisfied with their cooperation, but the same we thought about Clinton and Obama, before Clinton came forward with her speech "Shame on you Barack Obama!" when she criticized the way he leads his campaign. If we can be a witnesses of such incredible change of opinions only time will show. So far we could only see president Bush expressing in superlatives about McCain and he even looks he is in very optimistic mood. That confirms his statement: "I can help raise him money, and if he wants my pretty face standing by his side at one of these rallies, I'd be glad to show up."McCain said he intends to have as much campaigning events together as is possible for Bush. The only question now appears & Will be Bush's support a real support of McCain's campaign or will it have a negative influence on it?

Problems with economical growth
by Jana Passova

Factories in the United States feel decrease of demand for products that they manufacture. There was the highest decline of demand in five months in January. The orders for manufactured goods dropped 2.5 percent. Business is situated in very uncertain environment of economy. The economy has started to have bigger problems since beginning of this year. Mostly retailers and manufacturers are not in enviable situation. The weakness become evident mainly in demand for costly durable goods as cars, planes, computers and machineries. Demand of this category of products dropped 5.1 percent in January. Also the productivity of workers declined for final three months of 2007. That for manufacturers means only one thing. When the productivity gets worse, labor costs increase. Unit labor costs rose at a 2.6 percent in the last quarter of 2007. This all is just a result of problems in the housing and credit markets. People are more careful in spending money. Increasing prices of oil, energy and row materials do not help to work out the situation too much as well. According to Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve System and Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee, the most important concernment is to secure economic growth. The economy almost stopped at the end of 2007. The growth was only 0.6 percent. And it might be even slower. One possible action that can help economy to grow again is to cut interest rate. The first time a strategy was used in September 2007 and the second time rates are going to be lower on March 18 this year. Another problem is the inflation that needs to be keep under the control.

Price Record! Price Record! Price Record!
by Kamila Moravcikova

The situation is, when you use words like price, record, price record, constantly rising price, etc. in one sentence, it's likely that most people that heard your words would think only about this one thing: oil. Oil, oil, oil. The black gold, the stuff we all need and which makes us dependent on OPEC, Russia or another countries that were gifted by huge oil supplies (of course, only if you are not a proud proprietor of your own oil-well or even sheikh). Here are some facts. We all know that the price of oil is continuously rising, achieving new and new records, the forecast aren't positive. All of this because of many reasons, including weak US dollar, stock exchange speculations, fights and armed conflicts, politics and strategy of OPEC, and foremost - the oil supplies. We all have to face the truth, the oil will be gone one day for good. Please, close your eyes and repeat it in your mind. Sit down, say it once again and imaginary wave bye bye to your car pal, your motorbike etc. Maybe I paint it too black, sure you should not sell your car immediately. In my opinion, we all just have to change our attitude a bit. For example, what about using a bike instead of car one day a week to get used to it? And while riding a bike, try to think about the shortage of oil, about the positive side effects such as slender figure, perfect shape, healthy heart. Just few minutes and you will realize that this oil crisis isn't as bad as it seemed to be. The more negative the upcoming news will be or the higher prices near the notion "oil" will appear, the more minutes you will have to spend by bicycling. And if your neighbor (not aware of how to fight with this oil issue) asked what the hell were you doing with that damn thing, you would reveal your mission: "The Phased Transition from Being Sick and Dependent to Being Healthy and Free".

Google's desire to change the telecom market hit the FCC refusal

Spectrum auctions aren't something new to the US; they've been carried out since 1994. Rather than choosing which company gets the most wavelength to broadcast over by conducting hearings or by lotteries, the Federal Communications Commission or FCC in the United States of America organizes auctions. The form they use is Form 175 and any company or individual can become a bidder if they complete and submit this form and then pay the upfront payment. This allows the bidder to bid on a certain number of licenses in any given round, depending on the amount he paid upfront. Every stage of the auction, including submitting the form and placing the bid is carried out over the Internet and the FCC even provides an upfront payment calculator for the interested bidders. Compared to older systems, the auctions allow ownership to take place sooner, within a year from the auction itself. The big auction everyone expects now is a 700MHz spectrum auction in January, where Google had promised to pay the $4.6 billion upfront payment if the FCC agreed to change the rules as the search engine company and other organizations required. The group of organizations wanted four changes to be made which would open up the telecom industry to other interested companies and disrupt, if not end, AT&T and Verizon's oligopoly on the market. The FCC only agreed to change two of the rules and make the change applicable to only 22MHz of spectrum so it is unsure if Google will agree to take part in the auction any further.

Computer & Communications Industry Association (CIAA), a trade group with members like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, RedHat, and others that promotes "open markets, open systems, and full, fair, and open competition" filed a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission alleging that two major professional sport leagues and other four corporations "violate consumers' fair-use rights under U.S. copyright law."The CIAA complaint is against the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBC Universal, Morgan Creek, DreamWorks, Harcourt Inc., and Penguin Group (USA), accusing them of mispresenting the rights of consumers to use copyrighted material.Ed Black, CCIA's president says that warning on broadcasts, books and DVDs are "not to educate consumers, but to intimidate them. Certain warnings mislead consumers.""No deceptive message may be more widespread, more pervasive, more ubiquitous in our vast nation than the copyright warning which tells you that you have no rights."The CIAA wants that the Federal Trade Commission to stop those organizations to use warnings that violate people rights and to come with a new plan to keep away these mispresentations from happening again as well as a model copyright notice that is "accurate, balanced, and consistent with all provisions of the US Copyright Act and Federal Trade Commission Act" to educate consumers on their fair-use rights.

The Fed is expected to come to the rescue

Unless the Federal Reserve will come to the rescue, Wall Street faces the prospect of more problems and it certainly doesn't need more.Worrying has sent stocks gyrating, with the Dow Jones industrials swinging by triple digits four straight days last week. After Bear Stearns Cos.' chief financial officer described the current situation as being the worst he'd seen in 22 years, the Dow plunged more than 280 points. The markets need to settle down and the Fed's Open Market Committee's meeting scheduled in August could be the only key for this door. The economy is expected to recover for months but everything seems to be getting worst.Even if the Fed will give the market a boost, we should expect it to be a short time one, as it happened before. Is everybody so overwhelmed by the situation that nothing is being done, not even some economic reports? We just have to wait because all the data released is "assumed", "believed", "predicted" and "expected"...The reports from the Commerce Department for June wholesale trade are expected on Thursday and the reports on July import prices on Friday.

Oil reserves and their exploitation have been generating controversy and interest for years and it was only a matter of time before they lead to another corruption scandal. After a year of FBI investigations, the plot seems to thicken in the lawsuit against VECO chief executive Bill Allen. Many other former senators and high-raking individuals are accused of having sold their votes to Allen during the debate on oil taxes last year, and now three more Republican legislators from Alaska have been arrested for bribery, extortion and conspiracy. Their names: Vic Kohring, Pete Kott and Bruce Weyhrauch. Their influence would have been enough to guarantee a bill passing through the Senate to allow the building of a natural gas pipeline in the Alaska region known as North Slope. This is the most productive oil region in the USA and oil is the most important source of income for the state, so it is only natural that the interests are high and service firms in the area, like VECO, are making billions. The FBI has been tapping phones of the Baranof hotel in Juneau for months and is now in possession of hard evidence against Allen, VECO vice president Rick Smith and a few senators. Both Smith and Allen pleaded guilty in the trial and have resigned their positions in the company's board. Together, they admitted to having paid $400,000 in bribes to government officials. They each face a maximum of five years and $250,000 on conspiracy counts and a maximum of 10 years and another $250,000 on the bribery counts.

UPS at its centennial anniversary

Some companies make history and UPS is one of them. A hundred years ago, in 1907 to be precise, it was called American Messenger Company and was opened with a $100 loan from a friend of Jim Casey who was only 19 years old at that time. Together with his 18-year-old friend, Claude Ryan, ran errands and carried notes on foot or on bicycle and used their basement in Seattle as headquarters for their employees- Casey's brother and a couple of other teenagers. Six years later renamed itself Merchants Parcel Delivery, acquired a Model T Ford as delivery car and switched from messages to packages. In 1919 they expanded beyond Seattle and renamed itself United Parcel Service. The brand of UPC was taken for years after it went public, in 2003. A long history for a company started with only 100 dollars and the irony is that it is now hundred years old. It's a $47 billion business with a fleet of trucks, an airline and operations in 200 countries. Their policy of adapting to customers demand and trends must be good in order to be the world's largest shipping carrier. Chief Executive Mike Eskew said that they have to transform the same time the world does it and that was one of the reasons in purchasing Mail Boxes Etc and change it into The UPS Store. However, they are facing now a huge problem with their employees union. Contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters union and the CEO says they have to put any raise in the context of its overall cost structure, this way making it harder to get to an agreement. Due to the fact that the company counts on its employees to work, they will come to a deal that will benefit both sides. The predictions for this company are very good. They invest a lot in technology to find the shortest routes for its trucks and to save on fuel. The goal is to keep costs down and the customers happy. For its centennial anniversary UPS has been holding events around the world. On 28th August the company celebrates 100 years and Eskew the 35th anniversary with the company. Cheers to you, UPS!

Mattel is going to recall some more toys soon
by Corina Ciubotaru

Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Google exceeds expectations
by Claudia Sonea

According to a poll among analysts made by Thomson Financial the average price for Google shares was expected to be $739.23 at the end of the year. However, after Wednesday, there is most likely to exceed all expectations in the following days. The Mountain View-based company's shares reached a peak of $707 on Wednesday leaping from mid-September from $600 to $700 which has an equivalent in market value of 34 percent. The giant company has now a $55 billion market value, more than the total $42 billion that Yahoo Inc. has. This result comes after Google announce that it will revive the social network competition, launching a new strategy for outside developers. Furthermore, the news of an operating system designed for mobile phones distributing ads to people on the go made investors gasp. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin refused to split their company's stock and offer to other people the opportunity to buy a few shares, because their theory sustains a higher stock price that attracts more patient and knowledgeable investors. Their theory proves to work perfectly; a $10,000 investment in Google's stock at an offering price of $85 in August 2004 would now be worth about $83,000. Despite the results Wall Street has higher expectations and belief this is only the beginning. Dinosaur Securities analyst David Garrity on Wednesday predicted Google's stock will climb to $985 during the next year. The main revenue comes from advertising and the company focuses on that. New online advertising channels featuring video, graphics and other more compelling features were introduced lat year and also there was an expansion into television, radio and print. Moreover, Google will innovate the telecommunications industry by introducing inexpensive cell phones that facilitates the access Google's search engine, maps, e-mail and other applications when you don't have a PC to use. Stephen Arnold who has just released a study on the giant company calls it Googzilla due to the enormous power it has and the fact that it barely has any competition. Stay connected and search some more with the best: Google.

Loser.
by Barbie Kunkelova

About a sixth of Chrysler's North American workforce will be unemployed over 2007 and 2008. Tens of thousands of employees have been dismissed already. Due to sluggish sales and nonprofitable business. Chrysler has been struggling with nonprofitability since the price of gas went up and the Americans started turning away from purchasing big cars; the trend of minivans, trucks and sport utility vehicles was over. GM, Ford and Chrysler shared 74% of car sales in the US in 1997, now it is 57%, according to AutoBlog. Not even the merger with Daimler in 1998 helped Chrysler. It kept losing while Daimler succeeded; now Daimler is selling Chrysler off to American investors. A never-ending chain of strategically wrong decisions is not the best of perspectives one is looking for in a partner. Already in years 2001 and 2003 Chrysler reported losses of 5.8 billion euros. Plus the total losses from 2006 ($1.48 billion) add up to over 6.9 billion euros and they're yet expected to grow. Due to this there was money missing to improve quality, produce environmentally friendlier vehicles and safeguard jobs. The managers kept producing high, even though sales stalled. They never innovated. The company's CEO, Dieter Zetsche, reacted too late; he announced only this spring that they will examine their options. Since then, a new Chairman of the Board of Management and a President in one person was named & Jim Press. Under his ruling the company is focusing on a new approach and survived even the summer when the profits dropped by 19%. Two new models are being prepared for 2008. The massive job cuts are only a part of a restructuring plan. There are really only two things to do: build innovated strong cars and then wait for the public to notice. And jobs will be saved.
