On Sunday Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the largest privately run carmaker in China, finally came to a deal with Ford about buying Ford Motor's brand Volvo. Because of the crisis Swedish brand Volvo suffered from many losses. Ford will sell the brand for 1.8 billion dollars, the sell will be the biggest overseas auto purchase in Sweden. Volvo Cars spokesman Per-Aake Froeberg confirmed that a final agreement on the sale had been signed at 2.40 pm. The negotiations were held at Volvo headquarters in Gothenburg. The deal was signed by Ford's financial director Lewis Booth and president of Geely Li Shufu. Both sides confirmed that the sale was for 1.8 billion dollars. The! price is less than a third of the sum that Ford paid for Volvo Cars in 1999. Ford announced that it was planning to sell the troubled Volvo Cars to China's biggest private carmaker already in December last year. Ford agreed on the main terms of the sale. Ford was associated with the Swedish brand, well known for its family-friendly cars for a decade. Volvo Cars has about 16,000 employees in Sweden and about 4,000 employees all around the world. Volvo unions are against the deal saying it was vague on expansion plans and possibility of layoffs. Three Volvo unions released news in which they explained reasons for their opposition to the deal. But for unknown reason on Saturday they announced they are satisfied with the deal. Evidently, there is no more obstacle for the deal between Ford and Geely and the Chinese automaker can finally takeover the Swedish company.

Government Still Hearing Complaints About Fixed Toyotas by Magdalena Rosova
Associated Press analysis of government data showed that during the past two weeks complaints over sudden acceleration in Toyotas repaired under recalls have nearly doubled. 105 drivers ask in the complaints whether Toyota's repairs will prevent the cars from speeding up on their own or if there is any other problem that cause the sudden acceleration in Toyotas. Toyota said it is sure that the repairs were right and there is no evidence of other problems. However, Toyota did not comment the fact of growing complaints. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contacted owners who complained about the reparation and found out that several dealers made mistakes ! in applying one of the recall reparation. NHTS has already discussed the issue with Toyota, which will improve its instruction to dealers and describe them in more details. Toyota has recalled totally more than 8 million vehicles worldwide. Since October last year Toyota has received complaints that gas pedals in the cars are sticky and do not work properly. But it seems that some of the cars continue to accelerate on their own even after the reparation. The number of such complaints jumped to 105. Not all of them have already been verified. Many drivers whose cars have problems even after the reparation believe the cars have an electronic problem. NTHSA will call all owners who complained and besides the interviews it will also look at how dealers fixed the cars to find out whether the reparations were done wrong or if there is another problem causing the sudden acceleration.

Toyota drivers report they are still experiencing problems with their cars even after these were fixed. In past two weeks, the amount of the post-repair complaints of sudden acceleration has reached over 100. Drivers can submit their complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Japanese automaker that was forced to recall more than 8 million vehicles worldwide blamed the acceleration problem on gas pedals that, according to them, were sticky and could become trapped under floor mats. Due to the continuing Toyota problems NHTSA has become a subject to quite a lot of criticism at congressional hearings. NHTSA has been dealing with the problem intense! ly contacting car owners who issued complaints. According to the official NHTSA statement from Wednesday the agency came upon "several instances in which a dealer made mistakes in applying one of the recall remedies." Toyota is therefore trying to make the instructions more clear. Many people who submitted complaints said the previous problems appeared just a few days after they got their cars repaired. "I went in for the recall and it seems there is a worse problem now," wrote the owner of Toyota Tundra from Florida. "I truly believe this is an electronic problem." Another Toyota owner, John Moscicki from Oregon reported that his car accelerated to 50mph before he was able to stop it by pulling the gas pedal manually with his right foot from floor-stuck position. "It just went to the floor like some other system had control of it," said Moscicki. The Toyota recall have resulted in several congressional hearings and damaged the company´s reputation with sales falling ! down. Number of lawsuits was filed against Toyota. "It's reall! y an eng ineering judgment call," said Diane Steed, who served as NHTSA administrator when President Reagan was holding office. "The real challenge is not so much the numbers but digging to get to the bottom of what is the problem."

Vodiči automobilov značky Toyota sa stále sťažujú na problémy so svojimi autami, aj po tom čo boli opravené. Za posledné dva týždne vzrástol počet sťažností týkajúcich sa náhleho zrýchlenia auta dvojnásobne a prekročil stovku. Vodiči svoje sťažnosti posielajú Národnej agentúre pre bezpečnosť cestnej premávky (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Japonská automobilka, ktorá musela doteraz stiahnuť z obehu celosvetovo viac ako osem miliónov áut tvrdí, že problém sp! očíva v plynovom pedáli, ktorý sa po zašliapnutí ťažko vracia do pôvodnej polohy a zachytáva sa o podložku pod nohy. V dôsledku problémom s Toyotou sa agentúra NHTSA stala terčom kritiky na viacerých zasadnutiach Kongresu. Agentúra intenzívne pracuje na riešení problému a kontaktuje majiteľov áut, ktorí podali sťažnosti. Podľa jej oficiálneho vyhlásenia zo stredy prišlo sa na „niekoľko prípadov, kedy obchodníci urobili chybu pri uplatňovaní niektorej z náprav.“ Toyota sa preto momentálne usiluje o to, aby boli inštrukcie pochopiteľnejšie. Mnohí vodiči, ktorí sa sťažovali hlásili, že problémy sa objavili len pár dní po tom, čo im auto vrátili z opravy. „Dal som auto do opravy, keď ich sťahova! li a zdá sa, že teraz je z toho ešte vä! 69;š ;í problém,“ napísal majiteľ Toyoty Tundra z Floridy. „Podľa mňa ide o nejaký problém s elektronikou.“ Iný majiteľ Toyoty, John Moscicki z Oregonu napísal, že jeho auto zrýchlilo na 80 km/h pred tým než stihol zaradiť neutrál, stúpiť ľavou nohou na brzdu a pravou doslova odlepiť plynový pedál od podlahy. „Plynový pedál šiel jednoducho k podlahe akoby ho ovládal nejaký iný systém,“ nahlásil Moscicki. Hromadné sťahovanie áut značky Toyota vyústilo až do niekoľkých zasadaní Kongresu a narušilo reputáciu spoločnosti, pričom klesla aj predajnosť. Tiež bolo proti Toyote podaných mnoho súdnych sťažností. „Ide o výrobnú chybu, treba sa obrátiť tam,“ hovorí Diane Stee! dová, ktorá bola vykonávateľkou NHTSA ešte za pôsobenia prezidenta Reagana. „Nejde o počty pokazených áut, ale o to, aby sa prišlo na koreň problému.“

As if it wasn’t enough! After Toyota also Honda comes with some technical problems which could endanger passengers’ safety. The problems with braking system caused that more than 410,000 Odyssey minivans and Element small trucks will be recalled. Models from 2007 and 2008 have braking systems which can over time lose its power. Honda’s statement says the brake pedals can feel over time “soft” and must be pressed closer to the floor to be able to stop vehicle. That is the reason why all these vehicles must be recalled and repaired. Chris Martin, Honda spokesman said: “It’s definitely not operating the way it should, and it’s sa! fety systems, so it brings it to the recall status.” The only question which goes to my mind is: WHY NOW? Martin said there have been three crashes due to the problem and that’s why Honda notified NHTSA of the recall on Monday. This automaker company has traced the problem to the device called “vehicle stability assist modulator”. This device powers electronic stability control system which by selective braking of the wheels keep the vehicle upright. The tests revealed that a small amount of air get into the hydraulic brake lines every time the vehicle is started. Over time an air bubble is created and it is just this bubble what can cause a loss of braking power. As Honda spokesman informed, the owners of mentioned cars should wait to get a letter from the company which should go out toward the end of April. But if anyone has already lost braking power, it should be repaired as soon as possible.

When someone tries to avoid responsibility I usually tend to believe he or she is actually responsible. And the case of Toyota Corp. smells bad to me. One week ago, 61-year-old real estate agent Mr. Sikes was driving his Toyota Prius when he found out he can neither stop nor slow down his car. After about 20 minutes of crazy ride, he finally managed to stop his Prius. As California Highway Patrol officer who was pulling alongside Sikes said the car was traveling at 90 mph with the brake lights illuminated and the smell of burning brakes in the air. But Toyota casts doubt on Sikes’ claim and they think he probably didn’t apply the brake forcefully. If he was appl! ying the brake forcefully or shifting into neutral or trying to turn off the electronic power switch, he should have been able to stop his car. The examination of his Prius showed the brakes were lightly and repeatedly applied – some 250 times over the period of the incident. I would like to ask Mr. Akio Toyoda, President and Representative Director, if he wouldn’t apply the car brakes properly when his car would be rushing at 90 mph. Besides, if Sikes was applying brakes more than 250 times I would hardly doubt he wouldn’t try to apply them forcefully as well. All things considered, it was his life at stake. Even though U. S. safety investigators don’t have any evidence supporting or disproving Sikes’ claim, there is possibility they may never know exactly what happened with his car that day.

Tommy Hilfiger brand sold for 2.2 billion euros by Zuzana Zelenakova
Tommy Hilfiger Corporation, clothing and design group known for its cool elegance, is being sold to the owner of Calvin Klein Phillips-Van Heusen for 2.2 billion euros ($3 billion). The brand was owned by private equity and venture capital firm Apax Partners till now. Apax Partners acquired it back in 2006 from Hong Kong businessman Silas Chou. "I look forward to remaining actively involved in the business," said Tommy Hilfiger, who founded the brand in 1984 and still remains main designer. "This is the next phase in the global evolution and expansion of the Tommy Hilfiger brand." Phillips-Van Heusen, with headquarters in Manhattan, is the world´s largest shirt compan! y and owns various brands such as Calvin Klein, Izod, Arrow and licenses many others, for example DKNY, Timberland, Sean John and so on. According to the deal, Apax Partners remain shareholders in the company as it was sold for 1.9 billion euros in cash and 276 million euros in Phillips-Van Heusen stock, which reacted quite positively to the latest acquisition rising 9 percent. "This is a unique opportunity to bring together two premier companies, each with iconic brands, which will deliver enhanced opportunities for our stockholders, business partners, customers and employees as we leverage a combined global platform in the years ahead," said Emanuel Chirico, Chairman and CEO of Phillips-Van Heusen in an official statement. He expects more than half of their revenues to come from the United States, and the rest from the overseas. PVH also hopes that buying Tommy Hilfiger will help them boost their own brands all around the globe. Tommy Hilfiger, who claims Robert Burns w! as one of his ancestors, became part of the clothing and fashi! on envir onment when he began to work in retail at the age of 18. He later opened his own store called the People´s Place. However, after seven years the store went bankrupt and Tommy Hilfiger had to move on. Air France accused Irish low-budget airline Ryanair of unfair trading practices. Ryanair denied the charge. Air France announced on Thursday that it had filed a complaint with the European Commission. According to Air France, Ryanair directly violated European regulations when made the opening of new routes in France conditional on receiving financial incentives from officials. The airline filled a complaint in November 2009 concerning the benefit Ryanair company takes from aid measures implemented by local French airports. Air France further says the Irish airline received 6600 million euros from aid across Europe in 2008. The aid for Ryanair was in form of reduced landing fees and airport taxes. Low-cost airline Ryanair offers cheap transportation to smaller local airports out of big cities. The local airports are happy that Ryanair brings them tourists and are willing to pay to Ryanair. There was a case when regional French airport refused to pay and Ryanair simpl! y canceled its route. It has about 20 other places in France where it can fly and still get the financial aid. Ryanair denied the accusations of Air France and claims it did not receive any illegal subsidies. Ryanair's spokesman said "It's Air France that is getting illegal aid in terms of reduced airport taxes on its domestic routes in France." Over recent years the European Commissions few times investigated Rynair for getting preferential treatment. But in 2008 European anti-trust court decided for the sake of Irish airline even though Brussels wanted to force Ryanair to pay back the money received from an airport in Belgium.

European partner of American Northrop Grumman, EADS company announced its annual net loss of more than €763 million (1.04 billion dollars), just few hours after both of the companies dropped the bidding game of U.S. defence department. Northrop Grumman and EADS gave up the competition that had started in 2003. After they almost won the bid for new series of war tankers, the government favored common rival, Boeing company. Boeing is now the only one bidder left.The gap is more remarkable as the annual report in 2008 totaled a net profit of 1.57 billion euros. The gap was according the company caused by 1.8 billion euro provision for delayed project of military A400M. E! ADS started the project of independent European air defence with the support of seven NATO members. After years of delay and cost over-runs seven countries lost the hope, the project could be viable someday. The project was meant to create more than 10,000 job positions. Yesterday, EADS succeeded to share the loss among seven members and according its chief executive Louis Gallois the program was back on track. There has been more black luck for the company last year – as it stepped up a production of superjumbo A380 double-deck planes it was charged with 240 million euro penalty. The company remains precarious of this year's forecast. It will be success if it stays stable, observers suggest.According company A380 sales totaled up to 42.8 billion euro last year. It sold its maximum of 498 aircrafts to airlines. The demand for 2010 is expected to move between 250 and 300 planes.

Dlhé roky to vyzeralo na zápas americkej spoločnosti Northrop Grumman, jej európskeho partnera EADS proti americkému výrobcovi lietadiel spoločnosti Boeing. Americké ministerstvo obrany, ktoré pred rokmi vypísalo tender na dodávku nových tankerov by malo o ukončení rozhodnúť do konca mája tohto roku. V hre však ostal iba jeden uchádzač. Spoločnosti Northrop Grumman a EADS v pondelok popoludní oznámili, že sa z 35 miliardovej súťaže sťahujú – dôvodom boli nedávno vydané vládne požiadavky, ktoré v&! #253;razne zvýhodňujú ich konkurenta, spoločnosť Boeing. Boeing je teda jediným uchádzačom na výrobu 179 tankerov, ktoré by mali nahradiť leteckú flotilu KC-135, ktorá slúži od paťdesiatych rokov. KC-135 pochádzajú taktiež z dielne spoločnosti Boeing. Nové tankery by mali mať v porovnaní s konkurenčným Airbus A330, výrazne nižšie nároky na spotrebu a mali by byť takisto rozmerovo menšie. Napriek menšej veľkosti by mali byť schopné zvládať celú paletu úloh, vrátane zásobovania stíhacích letúňov v stredných výškach. Podľa oficiálneho vyhlásenia pôjde o modifikáciu komerčne využívaných modelov 767. Tender ministerstva obrany však nie je novinkou. Po prvýkrát ho vyhlásili v rok! u 2003, kedy sa víťazom stala spoločnosť B! oeing. M inisterstvo od pripravenej zmluvy odstúpilo pre porušenie etických protokolov. V škandále boli zainteresovaní ako predstavitelia Boeing-u, tak amerických Air Force. Ďalšie roky to vyzeralo, že tender vyhrá Northrop Grumman v spolupráci s EADS. Pentagon verejne ocenil stabilitu lietadiel a ich zníženú rizikovosť počas operácií. Po siedmych rokoch však ostáva nejasné, kto vyhrá vládnu zákazku. Northrop Grumman s EADS pre zjavnú favorizáciu odstupujú. Boeing teda vyzerá na finálneho víťaza.Ale tomu dnes ťažko uveria ako (bývalí) súťažiaci, tak iní výrobcovia lietadiel a ich aliancie.

Northrop Grumman & EADS vs. Boeing in stake for Pentagon. The bidding competition for U.S. defence contract on new tankers has been reduced to the sole applicant. Northrop Grumman and its European partner EADS announced on Monday they were dropping $35 billion contract for the US Air Force. This way, there's been only one player left in the game. Northrop Grumman also said the governmental request clearly favored its rival. Boeing is now in 75-day long submitting period to propose for 179 planes. New tankers would replace fleet of KC-135 Stratotankers, made also by Boeing. The planes have been in use since 1950's. Boeing is now loosing its arch-rival Airbus. The company sai! d it was intending to provide new-generation of multi-role tankers that require less fuel supplies. Models comparing EADS's Airbus A330, should be smaller, but capable to refuel fighters in mid-air. The company announced it would be a transformed version of 767 commercial plane.The competition, however is of larger history – Pentagon has been seeking for new contractor since 2003. Although it made a deal with Boeing initially, the contract was dropped due an ethics scandal of its representative and an Air Force official. Later on, it favored Northrop Grumman and EADS's Airbus for its increased stability and low risk during the missions.Seven years later, the case is not solved. The winner remained unclear – till late Monday. With Northrop Gumman & EADS leaving the bid, Boeing is the only one and possible contractor for Pentagon. But still, the tortured contest may not be over.

Car industry ignores the economic crisis as much as it can! Instead of saving money and trying to save some more working places, the big carmakers thought of something more original. They produced new compact, but very economical cars. The public could see them for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. But that is only the light and the luxury. As government subsidiaries programs are almost done, the car makers are more than interested in profit. On the Show one can see the future of the car industry. But, whether these green cars are going to attract buyers attention, we’ll wait and see. That’s why today they only look glamorous and out of reach. Green car! s were at the center of the attention for this years Geneva Motor Show. Most of the cars are suppose to win the U.S. market. The thing with the ecological cars is that you can only watch them now, and have the chance to buy it in few years, knowing that these machines still are not available on the market. With heir hybrid forms, on the Show there were Audi A8, BMW Active. Japan introduced a redesign of its “Micra”, and as well, its hybrid Auris hatchback. German’s Volkswagen and Opel showed off their new carriers, Sharan and Meriva. It seems like the automobile industry is becoming getting more and more aware of the ecological awareness and the need to decrease the carbon emissions. So, even the sports cars like Porsche and Ferrari, represented their new hybrid prototypes. Who else if not the Mercedes maker, Daimler would dare to conquer the Chinese market. It merged with automobile company BYD (Build Your Dreams) based in China, to produce the more el! ectric cars possible for the biggest world’s market. Tha! t is not hing strange if we know that bad times make people in any area to join their forces just to stay alive and keep it up on the surface.

It seems that there is another bursting bubble in the U.S. This time, the main issue is the safety of personal cars.Toyota is not the only automaker having had technical problems with its cars. After more than a year of investigation, once the largest American automaker, GM is recalling about 1.3 million of its compact cars. The company announced on Monday it was planning voluntary recalling of 2005-2010 models. Among affected cars were 005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2007-2010 Pontiac G5; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico. GM vice president of quality stated the problem tended to occur in older models out of warranty. But it p! ointed to JTEKT, a joint venture, partly owned by Toyota. The supplies didn't met “all requirements for reliability and durability”, Bob Lutz, GM'a vice chairman said on Tuesday. American drivers proceeded about 1,100 complaints about the loss of power steering assist. 14 death and one injury was caused by this situation. And according general statistics published in Czech national television, car accidents were the major reason of early death of young people. The official remedy plan hasn't been developed yet, but customers would be notified when ready, the company's representatives said. The technical error is not the case of decreasing trust among carmakers. On the same day GM stated wrongdoing, Nissan announced it was recalling more than 500, 000 card in the North America for the problems with brake pedals and fuel gauges. Nissan, however didn't blame any of its suppliers.For me, as a potential driver all these news are pure proof, of blind profit-making of ! these companies. Because if they obey to technical parameters ! and regu lations, the actual error would be detected a long time ago. Not with five years old cars and several millions of potentially killing vehicles. Toyota was the first one to admit such alternative. Apparently it wasn't the only one - so let's wait for more to come.

Volkswagen has impressive plans for electric car fleet by Zivka Deleva
The German carmaker Volkswagen is looking forward to be as well a leader in the electric car production. The biggest carmaker in Europe is planning to increase the sales of its latest innovation in its fleet and by 2018, it should present around three percent of the entire range of products. That same year, the management of the company believes that can annihilate its biggest rival Japanese Toyota. Toyota was the one that first launched the idea for electric cars, but VW used it only as a motivation for its own improvement on the car market. And, so far, they are doing perfectly fine! The projections are that the first electric car is going to be set in three years. VW has! already demonstrated the hybrid technology in producing vehicles, at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, where it showed Touareg Hybrid. For the next year, the VW engineers are planning to test 500 Golfs with electric drives. And in 2013, the high-volume Golf and Jetta models are anticipated to dominate the hybrid and electric vehicle market.
