Do you like shopping?
by Barbora Misakova

Lot of people and experts are saying that we are living in a consuming century, that we live in a time, when we are buying more things than ever before. And I think it is truth. When I for example think about my childhood I cannot say it wasn’t good, but what I can say for sure is that I have never had more than one doll, more than one toy car or teddy bear. My parents have enough money, but they were never spending them for some stupid and unimportant things. What about children of this century? Their parents don’t know where to stop and then there are more toys in their children’s room than the children themselves. But of course this is a little bit different from the case when people are becoming shopaholics. Shopaholic is a slang term for oniomania what means compulsive desire to shop. Experts are saying that this kind of disorder can be caused by reduced self-esteem, depression, anxiety and stress, and the fact that buying makes shoppers more calm leads to their addiction on it.
Have you ever met or known a person who would be spending all his time in the shopping malls and waste all her money on things he or she actually didn’t need or use? If you have, then you probable met one of them. But do not panic! They are not dangerous, at least not for you. These people just have compulsive desire to buy things even it can lead to serious problems in their private life. New test revealed that nearly 9 percent from the sample of 550 people could be compulsive buyers. And even though the most of tested compulsive buyers were women, men can be addicted to shopping as well. Would you like to know if you are shopaholic? Then you could maybe try this new test which includes six statements and you have to answer, of course honestly, on a 7-point scale from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The statements such as “My closet has unopened shopping bags in it.” or “Much of my life centers around buying things.” could give you an answer if you are compulsive buyer or not. So if you are not afraid, you could try it! I did! And fortunately, I am not so bad on it (at least so far)!
