Chris Cantell Discusses Business: Strike in Scotland closes major North Sea oil pipeline Radka Konkolova
British economy weakens these days. At the first sight it could look like almost in slump. For exapmle, on Thursday last week there started a nationwide one-day strike of teachers and other workers from public sector, who wanted government to increase salaries of all public sector workers. More than a third of English schools were closed which caused, that children had to stay at home. I think it was no problem for them, but some parents couldn't let their offsprings at home alone, so they had to stay at home as well. And all of these have a bad impact on British economy. Government is also afraid because of inflation rate but in spite of this, they promised higher wages for the teachers.
Anyway, this haven't been end of striking English. Because another strike started there almost immediately, on Sunday. But this one have taken place in Edinburgh, Scotland, for 48 hours. In this case, the striking have been the workers from Scotland only one refinery. They have forced BP PLC to stop oil pipeline system, which delivers almost a third of Britain's North Sea oil. It is supposed that they have caused loss of about $100 million per day. But they only want to have higher wages and they want to bargain. The prime minister is persuaded that the strike wasn't necessary and he wants to break the strike this week by negotiating among the employer, what is Grangemouth, the chemical company Ineos and trade union, Unite.
Despite the fact that the production and delivery of gas and diesel has been aborted for a while, motorists don't have to be afraid of absence these stuffs on pumps. But they should think about how to consume it and should consume less and not charging it for the “worse times”. When the strike came, some petrol stations had to increase the prices of oil. To avoid running out of the petrol, stations have given limits of purchasing and lines of cars formed in front of the pumps. But it should come back in few days, because if not, it would be a totally chaos.
