Geoff Polites dies at 60

Geoff Polites is a name the common people may not be very familiar with but it is well known in the world of automobile industry. Mr. Polites was CEO (Chief Executive Director) of Jaguar and Land Rover. However, sad news reached the public about his death. He passed away on Sunday in his home town, Melbourne, Australia after struggling with cancer for two years. He died at the age of 60. He became Jaguar Land Rover CEO in 2005 and was praised mainly because of his successful efforts to make the companies profitable again. He also organized the sale of the two brands to India's Tata Motors Ltd. Ford, which bought Jaguar in 1989 and Land Rover in 2000, will receive $1.7 billion from Tata.“Geoff''s untimely passing robs his family and friends of a man who was a real inspiration to us all,” said Alan Mulally, president and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Company. “His leadership of the team that has put the Jaguar Land Rover business back into profitability has been exceptional. Geoff has given Jaguar Land Rover the solid foundation and established the strong management team it needs for a successful future. We will miss our friend very much,” added Lewis Booth, executive vice president of Ford´s European units. The position of CEO will be temporarily undertook by Chief financial officer David Smith until a permanent successor is selected. Geoff Polites had been with Ford for nearly 40 years. He was born in 1948 in Melbourne where he graduated from Monash University and received an economics degree. In 1970 he was hired as a product planner for Ford. Then he held several executive positions with the company in Australia and Europe and in 1999 he became president of Ford Australia. He left behind his wife Linda and two sons.
