Abbas wants more US support
by Lenka Filipova

As Palestine is now in her peace talks with Israel, the Palestinian President Mahmound Abbas asked George Bush administration for more help in this process on Wednesday. These talks have somehow frozen since the agreement by both sides was reached. Both parties pledged to have a deal till the end of January. During the discussion of the Palestinian President and Condoleezza Rice in the meeting on Tuesday, Abbas stressed the time that is running out. He said that time was running, and time was precious. He told the aim should have been reached as it had been said at the Annapolis Conference in November. Thus, he thought that more pressure should be made on Israel in order to tighten the Jewish expansion within the area of the West Bank. There was also mentioned the gap separating both parties that did not record any constrictions. As chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat quoted Abass, the former and still troublesome issue was brought to discussion. He emphasized the greatest obstacle that was hindering the peace process. It is ongoing expansion of Israelites' settlement. Until this stopped, Palestine would not move to any further step of agreement. And consequently the Abbas' spokesman told that American intervention is necessary to reach this.Bush administration hopes to arrange a successful meeting during Bush visit at the Red Sea Resort of Sharm el-Sheik to visit Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The main idea is to prepare summit of all key Arab leaders and make them agree upon at least something that will signalize the progress. However, the perspective of this summit is seen poorly from the Arabian side. This is due to Palestinian interest to see not only some points in the agreement framework, but rather all core issues which will finally lead to independence of Palestine.
