Sony's marvelous earnings!
by Barbora Misakova

Sony Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation and one of the world’s largest media conglomerates. Their revenue is estimated 78.88 billion U. S. dollars. There are five operating segments which represent also five pillars their business is built on: electronics, games, entertainment (motion pictures and music), financial services and other. There is no surprise that Sony’s quarterly earnings surged more than sevenfold. This manufacturing icon announced Thursday its net profit for the last quarter 2009 jumped from 10.4 billion yen to 79.2 billion yen, what represents 871 million U. S. dollars! The biggest Sony’s gains are coming from the entertai! nment segment. Worldwide theater releases such as “2012” or “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” were clear goldmines. Home DVD sales of titles like “Angels & Demons”, higher sales of Vaio computers or PlayStation 3 were other financial sources. After 25 percent price cut of PlayStation 3 it sales jumped more than 40 percent to 6.5 million units during the quarter. The past quarter earnings “significantly exceeded expectations.” In comparison with the same quarter a year earlier Sony’s operating profit improved to 146 billion yen from a loss of 18 billion yen. Sony, led by chief executive Howard Stringer, has become stronger. Yen’s exchange rate also helped. Too strong yen caused weakening competitiveness of Sony’s products in overseas markets, where the company earns three quarters of its revenue. As the yen’s strength seems to be easing a bit, it could help Sony to rebound. Of course only if the yen&#! 8217;s weakness proceeds.
