Movie industry goes through anything!
by Barbora Misakova
When the economic crisis culminated even the biggest and most prosperous companies were facing problems. In such difficult times, the only glimmer of hope can be found in the movies which have ability to take you to the different worlds. Is that the reason why movie business is doing so well even in difficult economic times? Raphael Kahane was talking to Nicolas Seydoux, head of Gaumont, the oldest film production company in the world. This French company was founded in 1895 by the Leon Gaumont. It started with production of short films two years later and at the beginning of 20th century it was film mass-producer. As Seydous said the company is from all film production companies “the only survivor.” Gaumont went through two world wars, the great depression of the 30s and shock of the 70s. The difference between today’s crisis and the past ones lays in the fact that world dramatically changed. Globalization did not exist at that time and cultural goods such! as books and movies had different role than they have now. As Seydous mentioned, first reason of today’s cinema crisis is that “everybody thinks that cinema is expensive when they go to see a movie.” That is wrong as “cinema ticket is one third of the soccer ticket.” The second problem Seydous sees in the “harvest” which is according to his view pretty good. That means there is too many movies produced these days and people can have a little problem with choosing the right picture. On the other hand, people today want to see something else, what would take their minds off. That is the reason, why comedies are so popular, not only in the French but in world’s cinema industry. related story (sgx16350): http://www.france24.com/en/20090417-business-interview-nicol! ...
