Adobe, the big spender
by Claudia Sonea

Tough times require drastic measures. The economic crisis reflects in the profit balance of giant companies like Intel or Adobe Systems Inc. If Intel deals with the crisis by restructuring and reorganizing its divisions, Adobe does the opposite and chooses to expand by acquiring smaller businesses. On Tuesday Adobe made public the fact that the fiscal third-quarter earnings were down to 35 percent by comparison to the 50 percent of the previous year. This decline in profits determined Adobe to turn towards new means of making money besides charging for its programs and their upgrades, and to pursue the acquisition of ! Omniture, a publicly held online marketing and web analytics company that charges customers fees based on the website traffic/month. Although Omniture agreed to be bought, the deal is not yet closed and things might change, thus Adobe took all the necessary measures and compelled Omniture to pay a fee of $64 million if they back down. It is not at all surprising as it has agreed to pay $21.50 per share for the growing business software maker, which is well above the market’s closing price and shows in the same time the importance of the acquisition. Who is Omniture? Well, it is the biggest provider of software that analyzes how consumers use websites and has customers in 75 countries worldwide. It is a smart move to combine Adobe's Creative Suite line of design software with Omniture's as the customers, most of the professional websites, will use products like Flash to create multimedia content online and then stu! dy users’ interaction with the tools provided by Omnitur! e.
