American social-networking sites expanding overseas
by Tatiana Hadarova

All the big American social-networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook are going global. They started their aggressive expansion because of clear facts and numbers, that about 80% of the world's estimated 1.2 billion Internet users are overseas, outside the USA, according to Computer Industry Almanac. As Marissa Gluck, an analyst at Radar Research says, this expansion "is a land grab, as well as a form of insurance in case the U.S. market proves itself to be fickle." Most targeted are Asia and Europe, because there are more users of social networks than in USA and so the e-market is growing faster. Due to their expansion, some sites are offering translation applications (e.g. Facebook) or are launching completely new sites. Another social-network giant MySpace is going to start new operations in Russia, Turkey, Portugal and Poland this year. Also LinkedIn, which is very popular among professionals, is going to start its new base in London. †This site, which is orientated on users, who look for job, professional advices or just old colleagues or classmates, hopes to rise number of its users to 2 million this year. In Russia, media company SUP has been established as the fourth-largest website and as the Russian e-market is vast and has a big potential, CEO of SUP Andrew Paulson says it is poised to follow the same strategy in other countries where there are no clear leaders in the social-networking market. The fact that there most of the social-networking users is essential for SigEx Telecom. As the American social-networking expands to Europe, the number of their clients is growing from what might also benefit SigEx.
